Understanding Acid Indigestion

updated 01/14/2008

Do you ever experience times when it feels like your food just isn't moving? It just seems to sit in your body, like a rock, like it will never digest. You might be suffering from acid indigestion. In this particular type of indigestion, the body overproduces hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Unlike heartburn, the acid does not irritate the esophagus.

What Causes Acid Indigestion?

  • Food high in fat content or spicy
  • Eating too fast
  • Eating to excess
  • Drinking excessoive alcohol or caffeine
  • Eating just when you're body is slowing down, late in the evening or just before bed time
  • Adrenaline pumps, blood races through your body and you're on the move. But your digestive tract is not part of the rush and it actually slows its process. This can lead to indigestion.

It's important to note that excessive amounts of acid in your stomach can irritate the stomach lining and eventually cause sores or ulcers to form. And with that, you should know that in the majority of the cases of stomach ulcers, a presence of excess stomach is not determined to be the cause.

  • Eat when you still have some physical activities left to perform in your day.
  • Start eating a healthy diet.
  • Eat portions that will supply your needs only. (the quantity needed is generally far less than you're served in a restaurant or at home for that matter)
