The Dangers of Bulk Laxatives

updated 09/22/2008

The Dangers of Bulk Laxatives

Bulk-forming laxatives are designed with highly absorbent dead fiber in most cases, (instead of healthy, live fibers from live vegetables and fruit). Their method of operation is to increase the mass stool overall. This increased size is supposed to force the bowels to work harder to push out the mass.

These are good conditions, increased stool mass and fiber, under healthy circumstances. The danger in using a bulk-forming laxative though is that you run the risk of having it clog bowels that are already having trouble.

Most over-the-counter fiber laxatives contain psyllium, a very popular ingredient in colon cleansers.

Examples of Bulk-Forming Laxatives:

  • Guar Gum: Benefiber®
  • Methyl Cellulose: Citrucel®
  • Psyllium: Metamucil® Psyllium Fiber

People have reported several adverse reactions to taking psyllium products. After long-term use, the following reactions were reported:

  • Allergic Reactions - Skin Irritation or Hives. Possibly labored breathing
  • Anaphylaxis — potentially life threatening
  • Negatively affect absorption of certain essential vitamins and minerals such as iron
  • Obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract has also been regularly cited in studies of patients taking psyllium products (especially common in constipation-prone individuals)
