How to Eliminate Chemical Toxins from Indoor Air
updated 06/16/2008
The many toxins that we have to expel from our bodies come from the foods we eat, the water we drink and things that we touch. Beyond your basic pollutants like pet dander and mold spores, there are chemical toxins that are airborne. Fumes from substances are inhaled. Everyday exposure to these chemical air toxins can lead to an increased chance of developing cancer, aggravate sinus cavities and cause allergic reactions. We are constantly in contact with chemical toxins that are also air toxins in our day to day life, from gas additives to pollen.
Chemical toxins are often man-made. They are developed in an effort to make a life better. Eventually their toxic characteristics become known as well as their hazards to our health.
- Lung disease is the number three killer in America.¹
- Voluntary actions such as smoking and not taking proper precautionary measures while removing hazardous material such as asbestos increases your chances of developing cancer.
- Millions of Americans, adults and children alike are very sensitive to toxic fumes that furniture gives off. They suffer from chronic allergy symptoms and often don't realize it's their furniture causing this.
- 35 million Americans are living with chronic lung disease such as Asthma, Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis.²
The effects are compounded by recycling air in buildings, such as homes, hotels, schools, malls and office buildings. It's become apparent that sealing buildings for economical reasons is part of the problem.
What Chemical Toxins are In the Air?
Chemical toxins such as arsenic, radon, and ammonia are all examples of deadly air toxins. They are introduced into the air to "help" people like spray aerosols used to scent the air and clean offices. Another threat comes from chemical releases from certain materials used in upholstery and carpet. These all have can have negative effects on your lungs and conditions such as asthma.
When I think of all the harm these and other toxins can cause I am glad to know there are ways to help prevent damage from these air toxins by eliminating them from our indoor air.
How to Eliminate Chemical Toxins from Indoor Air
If you are like me you will want to do what is best for the health of yourself and family. There are many ways to clean the air around you, both natural and man-made.
- Shop for natural instead of chemical based air fresheners. Several essential oils are good for this purpose. You can dilute them in distilled water and spray them in your indoor environments: tea tree, citronella, lavender, orange & lemongrass oils.
- Have you been thinking about adding plants? You can get toxin-absorbing plants for each room in your office and your home. Some plants that are good for this are Boston ferns, Peace Lilies, Areca Palms, Arrowhead Vines, Spider Plans, Chrysanthemums, Dracaenas, and Golden Pothos.
- Do you love the smell of rain? It's actually good for you. During your next rainstorm, open your windows to let in the fresh oxygen to circulate air instead of trying to keep in and recycle the same stale air.
- Chemical air toxins can come from furniture and bedding. They can come from sofas and chairs too. In fact many fabrics used in upholstery are treated with chemicals that are released over time.
- A standard chemical used by many manufacturers is formaldehyde. It's best to avoid this by buying hypoallergenic furniture.³
- Check for safe content in your furniture, such as solid wood furniture and not particle board.
- Air Purification systems that fit on a shelf or counter are readily available these units eliminate air toxins and chemical toxins by using ultraviolet light, ozone, & ionization.
