DID
YOU KNOW? : That
Oxygen is an excellent colon cleanser
Did you know that Oxygen, our natural healer of
disease, is the most powerful colon cleanser available
when taken in powder form mixed with distilled water.
By flooding the colon with Oxygen, you turn the
stored waste matter of a lifetime into mush and
eliminate it. Pathogens hiding out in the intestinal
tract include bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungus and
parasites. These anaerobic microorganisms thrive
in dark, moist, warm, low oxygen environments like
the intestines. Magnesium based Oxygen will create
a very unfriendly home for these pathogens to survive
and thrive. Common problems like constipation, bloating
and yeast infection can finally be brought under
control. Magnesium based Oxygen eliminates the need
for uncomfortable colonics which only clean a small
section of your intestinal tract.

TIP
OF THE MONTH: Determining
your WATER needs
How much water do I need to
drink per day?
I'm sure you have heard the old saying, drink eight-
8oz. glasses of water per day. This is a good rule
but it does not take into account your body weight,
your activity level or if you drink caffeine products.
Here is an easy formula to use to calculate your
needs. Take your current body weight and multiply
it by (.66). This
will give you the number of ounces you need per
day.
Then divide that number by 8
and you will have the number of 8oz.
glasses per day. Then add another 8oz for every
caffeine product you consume.
Here's an example of myself:
I currently weigh 173
pounds.
173lbs X .66=114.18oz
divided by 8 =
14.27 (8oz.
glasses)
of water per day.
In addition to the 14 glasses per day, I drink about
2 cups of coffee. So I need to drink an extra 2
glasses or 16 glasses per day. This is exactly one
gallon of water per day. You can see that if I was
following the old saying of eight- 8 oz. glasses
or (64 oz) I would only be drinking half of my needs!
It is a fact that 60-70% of the body and up to 85%
of the brain is composed of water. Much of the pain
in the body and the perception of pain by the brain
are a result of a state of dehydration. There are
very few people that are well hydrated. Try increasing
your water intake by 2 cups a day until you reach
your recommended level. If you try to increase it
too fast you will be in the bathroom every 15 minutes
and this is very inconvenient for most people. It
takes the kidneys a few days to adjust to the increased
water intake, but you will be surprised at the difference
you will feel and also the improvement in your mental
state just from being well hydrated!

NEWS: A Tomato
a Day keeps the Doctor Away
I know you have heard this before; "An apple a day
keeps the doctor away", but have you ever heard
"a TOMATO a day keeps the doctor away?"
Tomatoes contain substances called Phytochemicals,
which researchers are saying can improve the immune
system, fight off infections and cancers, lower
toxin levels and even reverse osteoporosis!
Many of the naturally occurring substances found
in fruits and vegetables such as antioxidant vitamins
and minerals were thought to be responsible for
all of these health benefits, but now we are finding
out that it is more likely the Phytochemicals. Phytochemicals
are "plant-chemicals" that add flavor and color
to plants and protect them from disease. There are
literally thousands of different Phytochemicals
in plants and researchers are continually finding
more.
TOMATOES have at least 10,000 different Phytochemicals!
While it is difficult to isolate these Phytochemicals,
researchers have found and manufactured supplement
formulas that contain some of the better known Phytochemicals
such as Genistein, which is found in soybeans. The
only problem with taking these formulas is that
you are only getting a selected number of phytochemicals
and you are missing out on all the rest found in
the whole food itself. Many of these other "health-boosting"
Phytochemicals have not even been isolated yet.
Recent research has proved that a diet high in soybeans
can actually prevent or even reverse osteoporosis
because of the "estrogen-like" properties of the
natural plant hormones found in soybeans. Because
of these properties soybeans have been used as a
safe alternative to estrogen replacement drugs,
without the side effects. Even though estrogen replacement
drugs have side effects like increased risk of breast
and certain vaginal cancers I don't recommend stopping
your medication all of the sudden and switching
completely to soybeans. However, you should talk
to your doctor about gradually reducing your dosages
and replacing them with soybean products.
Everyone wants an answer in a pill but even as creative
as supplement manufacturer's are, we have to remember
that a supplement is still a supplement and not
a "substitute." There is so much that you can get
out of fruits and vegetables that you can't get
from a pill and when eaten whole, they also supply
you with a good source of fiber.
Here is a list of foods that are especially high
in Phytochemicals: Soybeans, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts,
Cauliflower, Cabbage, Beans, Lentils, all types
of Fruits (especially TOMATOES) and Vegetables.
If you can't stand eating vegetables, juicers may
help but you will miss out on a lot of the nutrients,
Phytochemicals and fibers that are only found in
the "meat" of these plant foods.

Substitutes, How Safe are They?
SUPPLEMENT
SPOTLIGHT: 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan (5HTP)
You may remember about 10 years ago when tryptophan
was taken off the market because of some contaminants
that were found in selected batches, mostly from
Japan. Well, because of that scare, the FDA took
it off the market and we lost out on the benefits.
Until now. 5-HTP or 5-hydroxytryptophan has recently
been released and it is actually a better alternative
to the tryptophan sold before. There are several
reasons why people may need to supplement with 5-hydroxytryptophan:
insomnia, depression, to elevate moods, lower anxiety,
decrease migraines, reduce stress, control appetite,
treat ADD, and even increase growth hormone production.
The new 5-HTP is more effective than tryptophan
because it requires fewer steps to become serotonin.
Serotonin is a nuerotransmitter that is primarily
responsible for slowing brain activity during rest
and sleep, but can also help combat depression and
insomnia and stabilize moods. Consequently, serotonin
stimulates the pituitary gland to release growth
hormone, and the amount of this release is directly
related to the amount of serotonin.
5-HTP is safer than the old tryptophan because it
comes from a plant (Griffonia simplicifolia). This
newer form of serotonin booster produces roughly
60% more serotonin than straight tryptophan. Several
studies have shown that 5-HTP is as effective for
treating depression as Prozac, Zoloft, and other
serotonin altering drugs. There have also been studies
suggesting a dose of 100-200mg, 3 times per day
can be very effective for the treatment of migraines.
How much should you take? That depends on your condition
and the severity of it. For general mood elevation,
ADD and better sleep, I recommend taking 50-100mg
twice a day, although other sources say 100-200mg,
3 times a day. I don't believe more is better because
it may throw off your body's hormonal and regulatory
system. Keep your eyes open for any other information
about 5-HTP because there is a multitude of research
being conducted right now. If you want to get your
tryptophan naturally, the best dietary sources include
brown rice, cottage cheese, meat (especially turkey),
milk, peanuts and soy protein.

HERB'S
CORNER: The Malabar
tamarind or Garcinia Cambogia
The Malabar tamarind or Garcinia Cambogia is a yellowish
fruit that is found in India and contains the active
ingredient hydroxycitric acid or HCA. HCA has been
shown to inhibit fat production within the body
by blocking the conversion of carbohydrates to fat
in the liver. You see, when you eat a diet high
in carbohydrates, the body (actually the liver)
will turn the excess carbohydrates that you don't
need into fat which is then delivered to your fat
cells to be stored. HCA helps block this reaction
in the liver by inhibiting an enzyme needed to make
fat. Studies show hydroxycitric acid may also be
an appetite suppressant, thus controlling the portion
sizes you eat. It has been proposed that the combination
of HCA, chromium, and a thermogenic formula can
greatly enhance weight loss. HCA or Garcinia Cambogia
is usually taken at 300-500mg, 3 times a day and
you should read the label to make sure it contains
at least 50% pure HCA.

Q: I have headaches
frequently and I think they are migraines. Is there
anything natural that can help?
A: Yes, First you
should see your doctor to determine the type of
headache that you have. A migraine headache is usually
caused by an excessive dilation of the blood vessels
in the brain. These headaches are usually on one
side of the head and produce a severe throbbing
pain. This pain is normally around the temple area
or behind the ear. You may experience symptoms such
as nausea, vomiting, dizziness and visual disturbances.
It is also common to be very sensitive to light
and sounds.
Before you do anything, check your diet. It is very
common for food allergies to cause a migraine headache.
The most common foods that trigger a migraine are
chocolate, alcohol (especially red wine and beer),
cheese, and citrus fruits. Foods that are fermented
or contain yeast may also cause a migraine. These
types of foods can cause histamine levels to rise,
which in turn dilate the blood vessels in the brain.
I recommend the combination of the herb fewerfew,
magnesium and the amino acid 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan.
One of the theories behind the cause of migraines
is a deficiency in serotonin, a brain chemical that
is important in regulating moods. In fact, one of
the most common prescription medications for migraines
is Imitrex, which works on the same principle of
raising serotonin levels. This can be boosted naturally
with 5-Hydroxy-tryptophan. Magnesium is used to
reduce histamine levels and feverfew works by inhibiting
blood vessel dilation. Typical dosages are: 100-200mg
of 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan taken three times a day,
300mg of Magnesium three times a day, and Feverfew
should be taken as directed on the bottle because
the active ingredient (parthenolide) varies with
different manufacturers. And last but not least,
Chiropractic manipulation can be very helpful in
the treatment of migraines.
Q: I just read
a new study that said Chiropractic treatment doesn't
work. Have you read this and what do you think?
A: Yes I have read
this study. The New England Journal of Medicine
published a report stating that Chiropractic manipulation
was not effective in the treatment of low back pain.
Let me tell you, I have some of the most highly
respected Orthopedic surgeons that are on the National
Board of Orthopedic Surgery sending me their patients
with low back pain, shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist,
and post-surgical injuries. Between 85 to 100% of
my patients are rehabilitated and out of pain when
I get through treating and rehabilitating them.
There are a lot of bad medical doctors in the world
today as well as bad Chiropractors, but everyone
is different. With any type of injury, you must
first come up with an effective treatment plan,
care about your patients and put forth the time
and effort to get them better. You cannot judge
someone or a particular type of therapy until you
have experienced it for yourself. I know a lot of
great doctors that care about their patients and
I know doctors that are just out to "make a buck".
It upsets me when someone places a general judgement
against a profession without fully exploring or
comparing the results with successful doctors. I
am not at all against conventional medicine it's
just that studies show most medical doctors are
not up to date on current chiropractic procedures.
In the medical profession there is a saying that
unfortunately still holds true: " What you are not
up on, you are down on".

Q: I saw something
on T.V. about drinking cranberry juice for bladder
infections. Does this really work?
A: Actually, Cranberry
juice is the best known herbal treatment for bladder
infections. It was originally thought that Cranberry
juice makes the urine more acidic which prevents
bacterial growth. While this still has some truth
to it, the latest research points to other chemicals
in cranberry juice which prevent the bacteria from
sticking to the walls of the bladder. If these bacteria
cannot stick to the walls of the bladder then it
is much harder for them to colonize and reproduce
to harmful levels. It is important that you do not
drink cranberry juice cocktail because it only contains
10-30% pure cranberry juice and has added sugar,
which increases the growth of bacteria. Make sure
the bottle says "100% pure cranberry juice". I recommend
drinking at least a quart of pure cranberry juice
daily until the symptoms are gone and then continue
this for another week. Make sure you drink plenty
of water (preferably distilled) and urinate as soon
as you feel the urge. This will help to flush the
bladder. Fresh Garlic or Garlic pills and Colloidal
Silver (a liquid you can find at health food stores)
are also good natural antibiotics and can be used
as directed.
