I have been taking a product called Super Cleanse. It contains Cascara Sagrada as the first ingredient.
It is working great.
Can anyone tell me if this is addictive like a laxative? Will it harm me to take it continuously?
I previously took magnesium and then it seemed could not have a BM without it. I still had occasional constipation and then would have to increase my dose. |

Cascara Sagrada is an herbal laxative that contains compounds called anthroquinones, the same family of compounds found in senna and many other laxative herbs. Continuous long-term use could potentially result in dependency on the product and in some people may produce a black discoloration of the intestine called Pseudomelanosis coli. There are some studies that suggest that prolonged use may result in some bowel damage to individuals that are susceptible. Herbs such as cascara have been used for centuries in order to help with constipation, but it does appear that there are some risks involved.
Oxygen-based colon cleansers do not function the same way as herbal products. They work by releasing monatomic oxygen throughout the length of the intestines which can literally liquefy compacted fecal matter. The oxygen does not function as a direct stimulant or irritant to the muscles in the bowel and does not carry the risks of dependency or discoloration that other products may. |
