Revival of Green Gardening Habits

It's not about overpowering the planet any longer. "Flower Power" has a whole new meaning. It's time again to live harmoniously with the earth. It's true that in the long run many of our old ways were the best ways. Get retro and get green.

Green Gardening

Look for natural, organic pesticides. Natural alternatives include no substance applications but manual removal of the bugs, strong blasts of water, attracting bugs away from your garden. Another benefit to eliminating pesticides is that it creates a good environment for the bees and butterflies to come to pollinate plants.

Indigenous Planting Increases Growth

In order to attract the bees and butterflies, you can add brightly colored indigenous flowers to your garden. It's not a good idea to force the land to do what you wish it to do. Make friends with the earth by cultivating plants that are native to your area. You'll be growing healthier plants with less "intervention" because these plants are in an environment that already nurtures them.

Use Compost Instead of Non-Organic Fertilizer

Another help is to use compost, usually made of old plants and kitchen scraps. Composting whether aggressively or passively takes a little effort. Compost Guide [www.compostguide.com] is a great resource on how to make compost.

In composting, you take old things, useless alone, and stockpile them. Dead plants, food you won't be eating can all be used in your compost pile. Organic compost provides the ground with a rich source of nutrients and even some trace elements. This helps you to grow healthier plants and produce.

The Power of Water Collecting

Do you remember when people would collect rainwater to water their plants? It's still a great idea today. You see, collecting this water helps to work against flooding and erosion. Try to collect water from the sky as opposed to water that runs down off the roof.

Green Shopping Can Help Save the Planet

Re-use bags as often as you can. And try to eliminate plastic bags from your shopping routine. Remember when your grandmother took their shopping tote bag to actually shop. Do you know what's coming back in style? Green grocers and other merchants are returning to that by offering cloth bags in the stores for sale. The goal is to eliminate the use of plastic bags to protect the environment.

Considering that our parents and grandparents did these things, and now we're returning to these actions, we have to smile. These are not innovative and original, but practices that worked a long time ago. We simply abandoned them in favor of something better. See how well that worked out.
