Editorial: Happy New Year - Healthy Skin

Hi Everyone!

Happy New Year!  We hope that the first 20 days of January have been not only a fresh, new beginning but have also been filled with peace and health. Remember that every new day is a chance to "start over".  Some have began new diets and have implemented exercise in order to lose weight and get healthy.  Stay the course!  The results of good health and well-being will certainly be worth the effort.

January brings with it the crispness of cold air and harshness on the skin.  Add to this the warm, dry air of most homes and you have fertile ground for the flair-up of skin problems, including acne.  Our first two articles address the issues of acne and how to work on getting the skin clear through lifestyle changes and outside cleansing and care.  Dr. Group offers his proven protocol for getting the skin clear, soft and healthy.  While this protocol is great for acne, it is also a good treatment for all skin types and conditions.

Be sure to read about the impending VeriChip and the implications from planting a foreign object in the body.

Many of us watched the CBS 60 Minutes story about Dr. Jim Shortt and the unfair, biased way in which they reported.  We had hoped for a much more balanced story, but, as usual, we witnessed a story that raised eyebrows and made any type of alternative protocol look like nothing short of snake oil.  Be sure to read the "Rest of the Story" which we have included in this issue.  Dr. Shortt deserves our support so please take time to make your voice known.

From all of us at GHC we wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.  We congratulate you on your quest for good health and well-being and hope that we can have a part in helping you achieve your goals.

Healthy Lifestyles Can Control Acne

By: Edward F. Group III, D.C., Ph.D., N.D.,CCN

When treating a person for acne, the only way to get results from effective treatments is through various healthy lifestyle changes. This includes the way you eat, sleep, work, play, etc. It is extremely important to focus on all areas that need changing in order for a sustained effort be complete. It is important in the treatment of acne to treat your whole self in as many ways as possible.

One common problem that faces people is stress, and not normal stress. What happens when the body gets too stressed out is the adrenal cortex converts adrenal androgens to testosterone in men and women, resulting in overactive sebaceous glands. Women's ovaries produce 25% of the testosterone while 75% comes from adrenal androgens. When the male or female body is stressed, more adrenal androgen is released causing double the amount of testosterone. This causes the T zone of the face to be oily, while other areas are still dry from dehydration. Adult acne is sometimes a by-product of stress and/or dehydration.

Water and estrogen calm the "body's stress alarm system". The most important type of acne treatment is to keep the skin from becoming dehydrated. Water is the most important acne treatment in that it is alkaline (pH 7.3) and can be considered a natural treatment or an almost free acne treatment. So the types of lifestyles you live will greater affect whether your body will reject acne or succumb to it.

Here are some tips that have helped other people and hopefully will help you:

1. Drink at least eight glasses of water per day (10 to 12 is better) to assist your body in getting rid of oil, waste and toxins. Water also helps moisten your skin, which keeps your pores from clogging. Most importantly, water helps relieve stress and relax your body so you can sleep better. Water and sleep help to reduce stress. Reduce coffees, soft drinks, teas and alcohols as much as possible as they are partial diuretics in that they push more water out of the body cell than they put in.

2. Avoid Astringent Natural Soaps and any astringent agents that shrink your skin's pores, such as witch hazel, oatmeal, very cold water, and rubbing alcohol. When your pores shrink, more oils are clogged in the pores of the skin.

3. Avoid stimulants, like coffee, tea, cigarettes, and excessive sugar from sweets and soda, should be avoided. Anything that affects your entire body, brain, and nervous system -- to awaken it in the morning or stimulate it during the day -- can easily stimulate the sebaceous glands to secrete more oil that has to leave the body via the pores, making your acne worse. Also, stimulants create stress.

4. Diet affects acne. Be careful what you eat. Try to eat foods as low in fat as possible.

5. Avoid alcohol considering it may worsen acne. People think of alcohol as a way to relax and relieve stress. It may do this but it also causes acne. Alcohol is an astringent that shrinks the skin pores, making them more prone to clogging. Also, alcohol inhibits sleep, causing more fatigue and stress, which lead to worse acne.

6. Avoid hot baths as well as very cold water on areas where you have acne. Use warm water well below 98.5 degrees on your skin. Scrubbing and abrasives should be avoided, since they irritate your skin, which should be left intact as a natural barrier against acne-causing bacteria.

7. Use Parfait Visage or Aquaspirit moisturizing natural facial spray for dry sensitive skin' as it usually gives the best results for skin with acne. Parfait Visage and Aquaspirit can be purchased online at www.ghchealth.com.

8. Spend limited time in the sun. You should get 15 minutes to the face and arms daily. The sun does kill bacteria, but it also acts as an astringent to tighten, dry, and clog your skin's pores. Avoid extremely cold weather as well, so you don't freeze and clog pores. Moisturizing your face and body and staying in temperatures ranging from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal. We suggest 100% pure Jojoba oil with no preservatives as a moisturizer. Jojoba oil can normally be purchased at GNC stores in the United States and Canada, and in most health stores throughout the world.

9. Reduce stress in your life. Allow as much time for tasks as possible to avoid time-pressured periods. Sleep seven hours or more per night so you can be alert during the day without a stimulant, like caffeine.

10. Avoid all hot foods and drinks until they have cooled to body temperature. Spicy-hot foods, too, can worsen acne.

11. Exercise for stress reduction by swimming in a properly treated indoor swimming pool. Use a Ozone purified pool if possible. Swimming pool water is usually 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is well below your body's normal temperature of 98.6 degrees. Thus, it cools your whole body, including the acne-affected areas, while providing excellent exercise to the rest of you to reduce mental stress and physical tension.

12. Change linens such as wash cloths and body towels after each use, as they are a great place for acne-causing bacteria to grow and be reapplied to the skin later. Wash white facial wash cloths, pillow covers, and personal undergarments daily with Vinegar, tea tree oil or essential oils of Lime, lemon or orange to decrease acne-related bacterial growth. Also use a natural detergent available at Whole Foods or online. Change clothes and sheets frequently.

13. Moisturizers can be helpful in protecting the skin from dryness. We suggest 100% pure Jojoba oil with no preservatives which normally can be found at GNC stores in the United States and Canada and can be purchased in most health stores throughout the world.

14. Healthy lifestyles will lead to a healthier skin and a healthier body may require a permanent lifestyle change that will reward you with better general health, more energy, and clearer skin to show the world. Don't be afraid to make changes! The initial affects may be hard to grasp, but you will quickly learn to adapt.

More natural resource tips found right in your home:
1. Blend a cucumber, apply externally, leave on for 20 minutes, then wash off.
2. Rub watermelon rind on the acne.
3. Apply Aloe Vera.
4. Eat watermelon or drink watermelon juice.
5. Drink tea made from carrots including the tops and beet tops.
6. Drink lukewarm water with 2 teaspoons of honey every morning on an empty stomach. This effectively lubricates the intestines. If one does not evacuate the intestines regularly, the toxins either end up in the liver or come out in the skin.

You may want to try the following Homeopathics, Essential Oils or Herbs:
~Belladonna— for people who experience flushes of heat to the face or who have inflamed pustular acne that improves with cold applications ~Calendula— for skin conditions involving pustules or blisters
~Hepar sulphur— for painful, pus-filled acne
~Kali bromatum— for deep acne, especially on the forehead, in persons who are chilled and nervous
~Silicea— for pustules or pit-forming acne
~Chaste Tree Berry taken each morning can help prevent premenstrual breakouts.
~Lavender or Tea Tree Essential Oil can be applied directly to the blemish up to 3x daily.

U. S. Says It Will Tighten Distribution of Accutane

By:  Rita Rubin, USA TODAY

Less than a week after a Food and Drug Administration scientist called the acne drug Accutane "a 20-year regulatory failure," the agency announced plans Tuesday to strengthen its efforts to prevent pregnant women from taking the drug, which can cause serious fetal abnormalities.

David Graham, a scientist in the FDA's Office of Drug Safety, told a Senate committee hearing Thursday that the agency had not done enough to ensure that pregnant women not take Accutane, which has been on the market since 1982. A voluntary program implemented in 2002 has failed to accomplish that, and an FDA advisory panel in February recommended strengthening it.

FDA spokeswoman Kathleen Quinn called the timing of the announcement on Tuesday "definitely a coincidence. This is something that we have been working on since not too long after the advisory committee meeting in February. Nine months does seem like a long time, but considering everything that had to take place, we really moved as fast as we could."

The FDA said that the new plan, expected to go into effect next July, borrows from a successful program developed by Celgene to prevent pregnant women from taking its drug, Thalomid, the brand name of thalidomide, which caused serious birth defects in thousands of babies in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Thalomid wasn't sold in the USA until 1998, when the FDA approved it to treat leprosy.

Under the new Accutane plan, doctors who prescribe the drug, pharmacists who dispense it and patients who take it will have to register with a central clearinghouse. This applies to Accutane, which is the brand name for isotretinoin, as well as generic versions on the market. Any patient who could get pregnant must present a negative pregnancy test before getting a prescription filled.

Nancy Green, medical director of the March of Dimes, says her group has been pressing for a more restricted distribution of Accutane for years. She says more than 2,000 pregnant women have taken the drug since it came on the market.

" There's a lot of putting heads in the sand over this drug, because it's a huge moneymaker," Green says. "It's a very effective drug. The patients are happy. The issues of inadvertent, unplanned pregnancy are not always addressed."

Green called the FDA's plan to create a registry "a major step forward." But, she said, she couldn't yet tell whether it's enough.

She says she is concerned that the FDA will continue to allow Internet sales of isotretinoin, which thwart efforts to prevent pregnant women from taking it. She also questions the wisdom of the FDA approving generic versions, because patients might not realize they're the same as Accutane.

Exercise To Improve Your Body and Your Brain

By: Dr. Joseph Mercola

Exercise is a critical component of good health, especially as you age. Exercise will help you:

Sleep better
Lose weight, gain weight, or maintain weight, depending on your needs Improve your resistance to fight infections
Lower your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes
Help your brain work better, making you smarter.

The key to obtaining the benefits of exercise is to find a program and stick to it. Of course, it is useful to have a guide, and toward that end I offer the recommendations below and an exercise table you can print out and use to help you track your progress.

Key points to remember when exercising:

Listen to your body. If exercise worsens symptoms, modify your program or, if need be, stop. As your energy and health improve, you will be able to tolerate larger amounts of the aerobic exercise, which will lead to weight loss. It helps to hire a personal trainer who can guide you through the specifics of a good exercise program. If you do use a personal trainer please be aware that many don't understand the nutritional principles discussed on this site, and it is useful to ask them to read the nutrition plan to understand the healthy direction you are taking.

Be consistent. You need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day to experience any weight loss benefits. Major studies have shown that 60 minutes a day is actually best. Ideally, the exercise should be continuous, but it could be split up into two 30-minute sections.

Start with walking if you are overweight. Most heavy people start with walking and that is an excellent choice, as it is low-risk and inexpensive. The major problem with walking, however, is that many people become fit relatively rapidly but don't increase the intensity of the workouts as they become more fit. Once you become comfortable with a routine, it is important to increase the intensity in order to continue benefiting. For more information on walking for fitness, see my article "Walk Your Way to Better Health."

Increase your intensity regularly. Ideally you should exercise at an intensity that makes it somewhat difficult to talk to the person next to you. This prevents you from having to measure your pulse or use a heart-rate monitor. If you can comfortably talk to the person next to you, you aren't working hard enough to produce the benefits you need to lose weight. However, if you are using so much oxygen with your exercise that there is not enough left over to allow you to carry on a conversation at all, then you are exercising too hard and need to cut back a bit.

Try race-walking. When outdoors, it is sometimes difficult to walk fast enough to get to the necessary level of exertion. Try race walking -- Racewalk.com has an excellent section on teaching you how to do this. However, if you use a treadmill indoors you can easily increase the incline to improve the intensity of the walking.

Try running. If you feel ambitious you can advance to running, which is my personal favorite -- I have been a runner since 1968. It is one of the most efficient and inexpensive ways to stay healthy; the only equipment required is a good pair of shoes. If you do decide to run, please recognize that most shoes will not last more than six months. If you use them longer than six months you will increase your risk of injury.

One of the downsides of running is that you must depend on the weather to cooperate. You can always use a treadmill, of course, but that adds the expense of a health club or the equipment for your home. If you are elevating your program to this level and will invest in equipment, I believe that an elliptical machine is, for reasons explained below, far superior to the treadmill in providing an optimal aerobic exercise experience.

Try an elliptical machine. Elliptical machines are generally less expensive and far quieter than treadmills and provide a complete lower body workout by rotating the use of the different muscle groups on your legs. However, you will have to be sure to use the elliptical that can incline throughout various levels. Some models have a fixed based and handles that allow you to exercise your arms, but I believe it is more helpful to exercise the different leg muscles as they are much larger than your arm muscles.

I normally suggest adjusting the resistance setting and frequency of steps per minute so one is just short of not having enough breath to carry on a conversation. This is the aerobic threshold that will produce cardiovascular benefits.

The ellipticals are also great for reducing the boredom and monotony of exercise.

What I normally advise patients to do is to change the incline setting every minute or two by one notch. This will activate different leg muscles. I also suggest reversing the direction of the leg movement. With ellipticals it is equally easy to walk backwards or forwards. You can also avoid holding on to the sidebars, which will exercise your kinesthetic sense of balance.

Be cautious. If you are going to use exercise for weight loss, consider a weight bearing exercise. It has been my experience that non-weight bearing exercises like swimming and bicycling, are not as efficient or effective for weight loss. You will typically need to exercise four times as long in these activities to receive the same benefit of running or using the elliptical. Since most of us are seriously time pressured, these exercises become less valuable for most of us.

Swim, but only in fresh water. Swimming is one of the best exercises on the planet, working all the major muscles, but it poses the challenge of exposing you to the large amounts of chlorine that are in most swimming pools. However, you still have the option of swimming in the lake, river or ocean depending on the temperature of the water.

Try bicycling, but be aware of safety measures. If you decide to bicycle for health, study all bicycle safety measures and be aware of the high risk for serious injury compared with other exercise options. Always, of course, wear your helmet.

Stick with it! The fact that we need to exercise is not news to anyone. For those who don’t exercise, its not a matter of understanding its benefits, but far more so, finding the motivation to start -- and stay -- on a program. The big breakthrough is that we now have techniques like EFT, a form of psychological acupressure, that can facilitate our ability to start and successfully stick with a long-term exercise program.

What The FDA Won't Tell You About The VeriChip

By:  Dale Hurd CBN News Sr. Reporter

(CBN News) - A little electronic capsule, smaller than a dime, could be one of the biggest technological advances in how we share and store private medical records. It may also be one of the most controversial.

Known as the VeriChip, it is a microchip that is implanted under a person's skin, and then scanned with a special reader device to reveal important medical data about that person.

Applied Digital, the Florida-based company that makes the VeriChip, hopes the implant will revolutionize how doctors obtain medical information, particularly in emergency situations. Theoretically, if a person can't speak, medics could scan that person and quickly be linked to a database that would provide crucial information like the patient's identity, blood type and drug allergies.

Dr. Csaba Magassi, a plastic surgeon in Northern Virginia, is among a nationwide network of doctors who are ready and waiting to implant the VeriChip into willing patients. His office receives calls daily from people inquiring about the chip.

Dr. Magassi said, "If you are in an auto accident, [and] you are unconscious, they could scan you, know exactly who you are; your medical history can easily be printed out onto the hospital record."

Dr. Magassi added, "If a patient comes in requesting the VeriChip, I usually tell them it takes between two and five minutes to place the device in place. A needle which contains the VeriChip is inserted. The needle pushes the device through, and it is implanted permanently. Put a band aid on and you are done."

Dr. Magassi demonstrated the procedure for CBN News on an apple. Once the microchip was inserted, the hand-held scanner read the number on the chip using radio frequency waves. Think of it as a human barcode.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the VeriChip implant for medical use in humans in October, a huge victory for Applied Digital.

In an effort to jumpstart interest, the company launched the "Get Chipped" campaign. It is offering a discount to the first few hundred people who get the implant, and also plans to donate hundreds of scanners to the nation's trauma units to promote use of the VeriChip.

But in a letter obtained by CBN News from the FDA to the VeriChip makers, the microchip is not completely safe. In fact, the letter lists a whole host of health risks associated with the device, including "adverse tissue reaction," "electrical hazards" and "MRI incompatibility."

Applied Digital and the Food and Drug Administration refused our requests for an interview to discuss these risks.

Consumer privacy advocate Katherine Albrecht said, "There are millions of people that have read the press reports about all the positives of this technology, but really have no idea about its dangers."

Albrecht strongly opposes the VeriChip for the physical risks it poses, as well as the privacy risks. She has been called "the Erin Brokovich of RFID chips."

On her Web site, www.spychips.com, Albrecht reveals the potential dangers of the VeriChip and other radio frequency identification methods.

Albrecht said, "There's a very serious concern that, already, engineers and people who think along those lines are already thinking like hackers and criminals -- they're already starting to say, how can this system be compromised, how can it be abused? When you are dealing with a radio frequency device, by design, it is transmitting info using invisible radio waves at a distance. In this case, that distance is only a couple of inches or a couple of feet so it’s not a huge distance, but it means that anyone who can get within a couple of inches or a few feet of you, even with a reader device they have hidden in a backpack or a purse, would be able to scan that number, obtain that info and potentially duplicate it."

And it is not just private medical information at stake. The microchip implant technology has been around for several years now, and has been used for a variety of different applications.

Thousands of chips have been implanted in pets by veterinarians for identification purposes. Livestock is now chipped to track things like mad-cow disease. Manufacturers are putting chips in products like clothing and shoes for marketing research.

In Mexico, the attorney general and his top aides were chipped for security purposes. And, in Spain at the Baja Beach Club, patrons can get a microchip with their financial information implanted, so they can pay for their cocktails with a swipe of the arm. As these pictures seem to suggest, getting chipped is fun and painless.

Applied Digital also launched a brand new application for the chip last year called the "VeriPay." This implant would hold all of a person's financial information. Rather than swipe a card or pay cash, consumers would scan their wrists for purchases. And, if a swipe of the wrist becomes too troublesome, there are already prototypes made of doorway portals that can simply scan a person and their purchases as they walk through the door.

Allbrecht said, "I think there is a very real concern that, down the road, such a chip would become mandatory. And not necessarily initially, but it would be voluntary, in the same way let’s say as credit cards or a drivers license is voluntary. No one forces you to have a driver’s license or to have a cell phone, but yet the vast majority of people do, because it is very difficult to function in a normal society without it."

For now, though, a microchip implant is voluntary. Only a few thousand chips have been sold and only a fraction of those have been implanted in humans.

For someone who wants an implant for medical purposes, Dr. Magassi and others are standing by. Magassi says, "If they want it, God love ‘em. I'll put it in. It's as simple as that."

The VeriChip just recently made its debut in a Miami, Florida nightclub, where patrons had the opportunity to "Get Chipped," much like the Baja Beach club patrons in Spain.

Doctors Warn Young Men: Get The Laptop Off Your Lap

By: Carolyn Abraham - Medical Reporter

New medical research is about to hit the technology industry below the belt -- a provocative U.S. study has concluded that the last place any male should use a laptop computer is in his lap.

Research published today in the journal Human Reproduction has found that laptops, combined with the thighs pressed-together posture needed to balance them, give off enough heat to raise the temperature inside testicles by nearly three degrees Celsius (5.4 F).

This increase, researchers warn, could endanger the production of healthy sperm and lead to infertility.

" Some people don't use laptops on their laps, but a lot of young men, or boys, have all these wireless services and they do use them on their laps to play games or do all sorts of things, on the sofa, or the school bus, or in the backyard and this is a continuous heat exposure. . . . But in 10 or 20 years when they try to have a family they might have problems," said study leader Yefim Sheynkin, a urologist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

So where should men use a laptop? "Use it on a desk," he said, "anywhere but on the lap."

If the findings sound, well, nuts, no doctor is likely to dismiss them.

The health of sperm globally has been a subject of great concern for the past 12 years. Reports, particularly from Western countries, suggest sperm counts and quality have been declining for half a century, while testicular-cancer rates are rising. The phenomenon remains controversial, but no one disputes that semen has its environmental enemies -- and heat is one of them.

Heat is known to mangle the traditional tadpole shape of sperm, as well as limit numbers, stunt sperm growth and make them sluggish. "If [Dr. Sheynkin] can measure that difference in temperature [with laptop use], it is significant, but it needs more study," said male-infertility expert Victor Chow, a consultant with the University of British Columbia's Centre for Reproductive Health. "We need to know if it actually lowers sperm counts . . . or [if] the only thing you can say about it is that laptops heat up testes."

But Christopher Wood, a 30-year-old consultant with Maverick Public Relations in Toronto and a laptop enthusiast, is already reconsidering his favorite weekend ritual.

Ever since his girlfriend bought a laptop five months ago, Mr. Wood has spent Sunday mornings snuggled in bed, leaning back with coffee in hand, watching DVD movies on the laptop, which is perched, naturally, on his lap.

" I never thought it could impact my ability to have children," Mr. Wood said. "I mean it would be really sad that I would not be able to have children because I decided to watch Shrek in bed."

Most people assume, he said, that the main risks of computer use are strained wrists or aching backs. But he admitted that the notion that a laptop's heat may be hazardous to his reproductive parts is not a complete surprise: The warmth the machine generates through his duvet and sheets on Sunday mornings is intolerable.

" I haven't been able to get through a whole movie yet," he said. "I don't think I'm doing myself any favors."

Dr. Sheynkin conducted the study over two one-hour sessions with 29 healthy men aged 21 to 35. In one session, researchers recorded the temperature of the subjects' scrotums as they sat with thighs together as though using a laptop. In the second session, the researchers took scrotal temperatures again, but this time the men had a working laptop that heated up from 31 C to 40 C at the end of the one-hour experiment. Sitting with thighs together increased testicular temperature by 2.1 C. When the laptop was added, the temperature rose to a median 2.6 C in the left testicle and 2.8 C in the right. Studies have shown that increases of more than one degree can have a negative effect on sperm development.

Dr. Sheynkin said sperm production may take up to six months to recover from heat damage, and chronic exposure may have long-term effects.

There are no known studies of the effects of laptops on women's fertility.

Doctors Attack "60 Minutes" Shortt Story

Opinion by Consumer Advocate Tim Bolen - January 16th, 2005

CBS has a well-deserved BAD reputation among News journalists. It's a fact one considers when dealing with them. Yet, I wasn't a bit hesitant to let them into Jim Shortt's story - for good reason - the old adage "There's no such thing as bad press."

There's a war going on in North America between the forces of "Health" and "Medicine." "Health" is winning, not because it has more money and power, but because the people of North America, and the world, have found out that there is a definite difference between the two - and that it is better to be healthy than medicated.

In fact, it is becoming clear that the two are opposites.

The CBS "60 Minutes" story about Jim Shortt is accomplishing exactly what we want it to do - public reaction.

One of those many reactions comes from a professional group of doctors who took the time to both analyze the accusations against Jim Shortt MD up front - and write a report, and then offered to speak, on camera, to CBS "60 Minutes" about their professional findings. CBS ignored both their findings, and their offer to speak on camera. I've included a copy of the letter from their President, Robert Rowan MD, below.

Why did CBS do that? Good question.

What CBS did do was to film an elected official with NO MEDICAL training, who was quoting the findings of a medical examiner who, in the Courtroom hearing, testified that he was relying only on a non-professional opinion provided to him by a known crackpot organization, in his decision.

So, why would CBS do that? Again, a good question.

Here's Rowan's letter to CBS Associate Producer Jessica Haddad...

Dear Jessica,

I appreciated your message about the upcoming broadcast, but it came a bit late - only hours before the show. I had other plans tonight. However, I was able to listen to it while out of the office.

Here are my initial comments. I will give you a more detailed response later, when I view the tape of the show that you promised me. I request that you send it.

First, let me say that you promised us a fair and balanced piece. I’m disappointed we did not get it. You had the opportunity to do some tough investigative reporting, but you didn’t take advantage of it. Consider the following:

(1) Your report left out substantial amounts evidence on Dr. Shortt’s defense. I and the other professionals gave you hours and hours of time and lots of science. You did not present one shred of that science for the public. Your report also didn’t mention the position paper of the International Oxidative Medicine Association and the fact that two of its board members (including myself) are past or current sitting members of a state professional board.

(2) Your report made inaccurate medical assumptions. Your team made a passing reference to the fact that the deceased was on the drugs for over a year. Your assumption is that (a) it couldn’t have been the drugs, and (b) that if you take drugs that long and there are no toxic effects, the drugs must be okay for you. Please tell that to the 129,000 Americans or their families who were killed by Vioxx. It is public information that they had to be on that chemical for many months for the toxicity to brew to the boiling point. You’re incorrectly assuming that there could not have been adverse drug effects since they did not happen within the first several months.

(3) Your report didn’t look at all the facts. You failed to mention that the symptoms the deceased had at the emergency room. These were exactly identical to the published and listed adverse effects of the prescription drugs she was given the day before. You could have found this information in any Physicians’ Desk Reference (available at your library). No patient in the history of hydrogen peroxide therapy has ever demonstrated these symptoms. Presenting this information would have given the public a fair opportunity to judge the case accurately.

(4) You did not ask the opposition to present even one scientific document demonstrating that peroxide, administered by our standards, causes any significant problems at all. I provided you significant information on its safe continuous use since the great flu pandemic of 1918. You were also provided with data, both scientific and statistical, about hydrogen peroxide therapy. You used none of it. Over one million people have been successfully treated with this therapy worldwide, with NO reports of death. Yet you allowed an elected official, with no medical training, to suggest that people are dying all over the United States from this therapy. Why was that not challenged? You also allowed insinuations that those who benefited must be lunatics suffering from placebo effects. Why are benefits from anything but prescription drugs always placebo effects? Most of those seeking alternatives are people who have tried doctor after doctor and chemical after chemical. Surely a placebo effect would have been seen earlier with the green triangle pill or the blue square pill, rather than a needle stick and IV infusion. Peroxide gets the person better after everything else failed and it’s a placebo effect? Peroxide saves a man from a suggested lung transplant because of sarcoidosis-induced respiratory failure and it’s a placebo? My own mom had her pulmonary sarcoidosis resolved with peroxide administered by me. Please don’t tell me that’s placebo.

(5) Your report allowed accusations against Dr. Shortt to go unchallenged, essentially convicting him in the press of a cancer patient’s death. The patient with prostate cancer was near death and was written off by any standard of care by his own oncologist. Dr. Shortt intervened only to improve the quality of life. He acted in good faith trying to ease the patient’s suffering? To accuse him of murder would be akin to accusing hospice of killing all the cancer patients it helps every year with pain relievers.

(6) Finally, you allowed a disgruntled patient to accuse Dr. Shortt of a money-oriented practice scam. You should have given Dr. Shortt opportunity to tell what he makes in a year – $50,000 (much less than a California office nurse makes)! This is a corrupt money scam? It would have been obvious that he’s doing his work to help people.

Right now, 80% of the American public uses alternatives, and I believe you missed a huge opportunity to serve that public with solid investigative reporting. Please consider doing a follow-up report that presents the real facts of this story, which I sent you earlier, and shows the true colors of the drug companies. With the recent Vioxx and Celebrex news, the wave of public scrutiny is moving rapidly against the drug companies. When the truth about this case comes out, you can either ride that wave or you can look bad when it comes crashing down. I’d like to give you the opportunity to do the former and with very dramatic recently published hard science.

Sincerely disappointed,
Robert Jay Rowen, MD

COMMENT FROM EXECUTIVE EDITOR: If you were able to tune in to the 60 minutes report about Dr. Shortt aired on January 12th by CBS then you know how ridiculous the segment was. You can read about the original attack on Jim Shortt MD by clicking on "The Long Story About Jim Shortt." I was speechless as I sat and watched the most ridiculous and biased piece of journalism that I have seen in a while. CBS says that the segment was “fair and unbiased”. This is exactly why we cannot and should not believe what we see on the news. Like the pharmaceutical cartel, CBS has had its share of “being caught” in untruths in the last year. They just did it again. It wasn't a "fair and balanced" report. Not even close. And, that situation is worth a complaint to the right people. Here's how you do that. Andy Court can be reached at courta@cbsnews.com  The associate Producer who handled the interviews, Jessica Haddad, can be reached at haddadj@cbsnews.com. According to FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting) CBS News can be reached at: CBS News 524 W. 57 St., New York, NY 10019 Phone: 212-975-4321 Fax: 212-975-1893 CBS Evening News with Dan Rather: evening@cbsnews.com 60 Minutes II: 60II@cbsnews.com FAIR (www.fair.org) would like a copy of what you send. They DO act on complaints. Send a copy to fair@fair.org. While you're at it - go look at the www.fair.org website. And, invite "60 Minutes" to show up at the next Jim Shortt event, a hearing January 21st in Columbia South Carolina. His supporters want to be on camera...
