Chlorine is not the safety chemical treatment that people think it is. Yes it does kill some bacteria. But it doesn't protect against parasites. And it's very toxic. Children and adults alike are susceptible to the harmful effects of chlorine. Let's get to the science of it.
The danger of chlorine is that it produces free radicals in your body. Free radicals happen naturally and your body has to work hard to get rid of them. Chlorine makes that job more difficult by adding more free radicals to the mix. When organic waste material comes in contact with chlorine, trichloramines, known to be carcinogenic, are released. These are heavy molecules that become airborne and so it's not even safe if you're only sitting on the side of the pool. Some of the dangers of exposure to large amounts of chlorine are:
Even though you can't control what's done in public pools, you can ask the proper people to use alternative means to clean the pools. It's a matter of life and health. At home, just make the choice to make the change. Use an ionization process to protect your family from bacteria and other irritants, without presenting them with toxic chemicals and noxious fumes. Ionized water can retard bacteria growth, and it's safe for your family to swim in. You can even drink alkaline ionized water. The only reason people drink chlorinated water is because it's still used in some areas to treat drinking water. But it's not safe!
As always, eat a healthy, organic, balanced diet to keep your strength up and your resistance to infections high. And let's go swimming!
