Hot News!: Cancer - Causing Benzene Found in Drinks

WASHINGTON - A government analysis of more than 100 soft drinks and other beverages turned up five with levels of cancer-causing benzene that exceed federal drinking-water standards, the FDA said on Friday.

The companies that make the drinks have been alerted and either have reformulated their products or plan to do so, the FDA said. Government health officials maintain there is no safety concern, an opinion not shared by at least one environmental group.

The five drinks listed by the government were Safeway Select Diet Orange, Crush Pineapple, AquaCal Strawberry Flavored Water Beverage, Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange and Giant Light Cranberry Juice Cocktail. The high levels of benzene were found in specific production lots of the drinks, the FDA said.

Benzene, a chemical linked to leukemia, can form in soft drinks containing two ingredients: Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, and either of the two preservatives: sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate.

The presence of those ingredients doesn't mean benzene is present. Scientists say factors such as heat or light exposure can trigger a reaction that forms benzene in the beverages.

Federal rules limit benzene levels in drinking water to 5 parts per billion. A limited FDA analysis of store-bought drinks found benzene levels as high as 79 parts per billion in one lot of Safeway Select Diet Orange.

A Safeway Inc. spokeswoman did not immediately return a message left seeking comment.

Dr. Laura Tarantino, director of the FDA's Office of Food Additive Safety, said drinking sodas high in benzene does not pose a health risk.

"This is likely an occasional exposure; it's not a chronic exposure. Obviously, no benzene is something someone wants to have, but the amount of benzene you are getting in a soda is very, very small compared to what you're being exposed to every day from environmental sources," Tarantino said.

However, a spokesman for Environmental Working Group — which has accused the FDA of suppressing information about benzene in soft drinks — saw the results as a problem.

"FDA's test results confirm that there is a serious problem with benzene in soda and juices," said Richard Wiles, senior vice president at Environmental Working Group.

Still, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer among men and women combined, second only to lung cancer.

Risk Factors For Colon Cancer

Age: Colon cancer can affect people of all ages; however age certainly increases one’s risk as more than 9 in 10 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed in patients aged 50 or older.

Race: Individuals of Eastern European descent may have a higher rate of colon cancer.

History of Gastrointestinal Disorders: Certain conditions, such as chronic ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease can increase a person’s chance of developing colon cancer.

Diet and Exercise: Individuals with poor diet and exercise habits are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer. In particular, those with a diet made up mostly of foods that are high in fat, especially from animal sources, have the highest risk.

Cigarette and Alcohol Use: Smoking and drinking are directly associated with the development of colon cancer. In fact, cigarette smokers are 30% to 40% more likely than nonsmokers to die of colorectal cancer.

Genetics: Genetic conditions such as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) or Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC) increase one’s risk for developing colorectal cancer. People with a strong family history of colon cancer of colon polyps are also at risk.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

The following symptoms could be indicative of colon cancer:

• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Feeling unable to completely empty the bowel
• Blood in the stool
• Abdominal pain, cramping, or discomfort
• Unexplained weight loss
• Chronic fatigue
• Unexplained anemia

Organic Spotlight: Organic Gardening - The Pros and Cons

Picture three ripe red tomatoes arranged on a wooden cutting board awaiting your pleasure. They've each come from a different source: can you tell which one was grown organically?

Two of the tomatoes were lovingly tended in backyards - one in a conventional garden and the other in an organic garden. The third tomato came from the supermarket, and it's easy to eliminate from the guessing game.

The supermarket tomato is the pale red one the size and shape of a tennis ball. Bred for packing, shipping, and storing, (not flavor), this tomato was picked green, has traveled more than a thousand miles from farm to store, and has sat on the shelf for weeks -- looking none the worse for wear.

Set this one aside. It was definitely not grown organically.

Two remain. For the sake of the game, they are the same tomato variety, let's say Big Beef slicers. Bright red, they were just picked and are still warm to the touch from afternoon sun.

It's not so easy to tell the difference in these; we have to look beyond the surface... literally. The quality of the soil from which they grew is the key element to naming the winner of this game: conventional tomato vs. organic tomato.

The chemicals in the fertilizers used in conventional gardens actually break down the health of the soil. Microbes that are necessary for making soil nutrients available to the plants are killed off.

The dead soil requires increasing doses of conventional fertilizer, and still the plants are malnourished, falling prey to insects and disease. Enter the deadly pesticides, sprayed liberally on the plant.

Now, the game is getting serious. One of the two remaining contestants in our tomato contest had better be carefully washed before being eaten; it's been dusted with poison.

On the other hand, the organically grown tomato also had fertilizer applied to it, but this fertilizer was made from naturally occurring substances like bone meal, fish emulsion, and rock phosphate. These additions fed the soil and did no harm to the beneficial microbes that make nutrients available for use by plants.

Pesticides probably weren't necessary because a healthy plant produces its own pest-resistant chemicals. But if there were pests, the organic gardener might have used a home-mixed spray of hot pepper and garlic, or something similarly non-toxic to humans.

There are a few additional techniques the organic gardener probably used, such as tilling in a cover crop to add organic material for the microbes and earthworms to decompose. This process results in a crumbly textured soil that holds moisture and allows the roots to breathe.

But even without the soil improvement from a cover crop, it's fairly clear which tomato is better for health: the only nutrients that can be found in the fruit had to come from what was available in the soil. The organically grown tomato provides better nutrition.

What is not so clear is which tomato is better for flavor. A test of the ratio of sugar to acid might be made, but that isn't a big issue. Both the conventionally grown and organically grown tomato are vastly superior in flavor to the poor tomato found in most supermarkets.

The original question in this tomato guessing game was whether you could tell which one of those ripe, juicy tomatoes on the cutting board was organic. Turns out that it's hard to tell just by looking, or even just by tasting.

So, what's the big issue? Mainly this: sustainability. Conventional growing depletes and eventually destroys the soil. Whereas organic growing techniques actually build and improve the soil.

In the end, the nutritious organic tomato contributes more to your health, and it is certainly better for the health of the soil from which all future crops will come.

What's worse, according to the Organic Consumers Association: "a routine practice on these giant dairy feedlots, many with thousands of cows, is to continuously import calves from conventional farms where animals have been weaned on blood, fed slaughterhouse waste and genetically engineered grains, and injected or dosed with antibiotics."

If this is the standard which constitutes organic, why are we paying double for tainted milk?

Agribusiness is pushing to make this labeling loophole into law. Think about the precedent this would set: if milk coming from cows raised in feedlots and fed genetically modified grains can be called "organic," what are acceptable standards for organic meat, cheese, eggs, and produce?
