Leaves are now showing their "true" colors, pumpkins are lining the walkways of homes and the bins of the local farmer's market, the air is fresh and crisp and the smell of luscious fall baking surrounds the evening supper table. Sounds wonderful doesn't it? Fall is such a beautiful time of year, but many people miss all it has to offer because of their stressful schedules and lifestyles.
This is a great time of year to make some "schedule" changes
in your life. During the months of October and
November try the following suggestions: Pack a healthy lunch and eat it outside--afterwards
take a short walk; talk a walk every evening right after you get home from
work--enjoy the sights and sounds of nature; buy some organic apples and
make fresh apple juice/cider adding spices such as cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg
etc.; as soon as you get up in the morning, sip on some hot herbal tea (cinnamon
is a healthy choice) while sitting outside in the fresh, cool air; on the
weekends frequent fall festivals, flea markets, antique shops, etc.; accompany
your children on a leaf collecting walk--see how many different shapes and
colors you can fine; collect pine cones for up-coming holiday decorating;
enjoy the warmth of a cozy, crackling fire while thumbing through you favorite
magazine; go to bed before 10:30 p.m.; perform a fall liver/gallbladder/digestive
tract cleanse now and after the holidays.
Most of us come up very short in the "stress
relief" department. In order to maintain good health and keep the immune
system functioning correctly, we must find ways to stop stress and enjoy
life. Fall is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities. There is just
something about walking in the cool, crisp autumn air while enjoying the
sights and sounds of nature. Try it and watch your stress and cares melt
away.

Ways That You Can Help Your Child Deal With Croup
By: Dr. Edward F.Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND,DACBN
Most, though not all, cases of croup are mild. When the child breathes in moist air, his or her symptoms seem to be relieved.
One way to humidify the air is with a cool-mist humidifier. Having the child breathe in the moist air through his mouth will sometimes break a croup attack. Another thing to try is misting up the bathroom with hot shower steam and having the child sit in the bathroom for 10 minutes. You can cuddle your child and read a bedtime story to help calm him.
Sometimes, during cooler months, taking the child outside for a few minutes can help break the attack because the cool air can shrink the swollen tissues lining the airway. Parents can also try driving the child in the car with the windows down to bring in cool air.
If your child has croup, consider sleeping overnight in the same room as him to be able to provide close observation. If you are not able to break your child's fast breathing and croupy cough, call your child's doctor or seek medical attention as soon as possible. As with most illnesses, rest and plenty of fluids are recommended.
If your child has croup, stay calm and keep your child calm. Crying only makes breathing more difficult for your child, so do your best to comfort or distract him or her - cuddle, read a book or play a quiet game.
If your child awakens with croup, try these initial steps:
Create moist air for your child to breathe. Run the shower or tub faucet to make the bathroom humid. Sit your child in your lap and read a book or sing a lullaby. Most children will breathe much more easily within 10 or 15 minutes. Once their breathing becomes easy, they can return to bed.
Alternatively, try exposure to cold air. Sometimes breathing fresh, cool air helps. Wrap your child in a blanket and walk outside for a few minutes in the cool night air. This often causes prompt improvement.
Place your child in an upright position. Sitting upright makes breathing easier. Infants may be placed in a child seat.
Offer fluids. Warm fluids, such as a favorite soup, may be soothing and help loosen thickened secretions. Alternatively, if your child loves ice pops, now may be the time for a special cool treat. Children may be reluctant to drink milk when they have a cold because milk seems too thick, but if your child wants milk, it's OK to drink it.
Maintain a smoke-free environment. Keep your child away from smoke because smoke may aggravate symptoms.
Run a humidifier near your child's bed for several nights after the first attack. Use a cool mist vaporizer if your child has a fever because warm moist air can raise body temperature. Clean the vaporizer after each use.
Purchase a humidifier for your furnace if croup is a recurring problem. Change the filter often.
Expect to have at least two or three bad nights before your child improves. Many parents are relieved when their child seems to have improved the day after the first night of croup, but then become worried because croup returns the next night. Be ready for another bad night, but after your child has had at least one or two good nights, you've probably made it through croup.
The symptoms of croup generally peak 2 to 3 days after the symptoms of infection start. Croup resulting from viral infection usually lasts less than a week. The vast majority of children recover from croup with no complications. Rarely, some children will develop complications such as ear infection or pneumonia.
Children who were born prematurely or who have a history of lung disease (such as asthma) are more likely to develop more severe symptoms of croup and may require hospitalization. Croup rarely causes any long-term complications.
Frequent hand washing and avoiding contact with people who have respiratory infections are the best ways to reduce the chance of spreading the viruses that cause croup.
There are herbs available that have helped treat this condition. These are the most common:
* Lobelia (Lobelia cardinalis). Cardinal flower was used to indurate ulcers and to treat stomachache, syphilis, and worms. The leaf tea was used for cold, croup, epistaxis (nosebleed), fever, headache, rheumatism, and syphilis. Lobelia inflata (Indian tobacco) yields lobeline sulfate, used in antitobacco therapy. It is used as an antiasthmatic, an expectorant, and a stimulant for bronchitis; it also is used to treat aches, asthma, boils, croup, colic, sore throat, stiff neck, and tuberculosis of the lungs. Some smoked the herb to break a tobacco habit.
* Wild cherry (Prunus virginiana). The bark has been used to treat sores and wounds, diarrhea, cold and cough, tuberculosis, hemoptysis, scrofula, sore throat, stomach cramps, and piles. Native American Indians treated snow blindness by leaning over a kettle of boiling bark "tea." Some smoked the bark for headache and head cold.
Additional Suggestions:
Vitamin C with bioflavonoids - 60 mg 4 times daily for children 6-12 months; 100 mg 4 times daily for ages 1-4; 500 mg 4 times daily for children over 4. Helps control infection and fever by boosting the immune system.
Zinc - 5 mg 1 time daily for three days for children 6-12 months; 5 mg two times daily for three days for ages 1-3; 5 mg three times daily for 3 days for children over 3. Use lozenges for faster absorption. Helps with immune function.
Eucalyptus Oil - Put in vaporizer and inhale the steam.
Onion Packs - Apply hot onion packs over the chest and back three times a day. Opens pores and relieves congestion.
Nopaine - Rub on chest and back area 3-4 times daily. Helps to loosen congestion.
Air Ionizer - Helps to keep air clean and healthy. Place one in child's bedroom especially if the child is prone to allergies, asthma or croup.
Keeping the child healthy constantly is the number one goal for you as a parent to keep him or her from having croup. Keep reading to find out what you can do to change your life pattern or your child’s to keep the child from developing croup again.
FDA Questions Use Of Antibacterial Soaps
By Jane Zhang, The Wall Street Journal
The Food and Drug Administration is questioning the use of popular antibacterial cleansers, which critics say may not only provide little benefit for healthy consumers but could carry environmental and public-health risks.
In documents made public yesterday, the agency raised concerns about the use of antibacterial soaps, wipes and washes, a class of products that includes everything from some Dial soaps to Pfizer Inc.'s Purell hand sanitizer. This Thursday, the FDA will bring the issue to an outside committee of experts, which will examine whether the agency needs to limit their use by consumers. The FDA could, for example, recommend labels that would limit the circumstances in which some products would be used, which would also restrict how they could be marketed.
The committee is looking at the use of these products by healthy consumers, as opposed to their use by those -- such as health-care providers and food-service employees -- where the benefits may more clearly outweigh the risks. The FDA documents state that it "often is not clear what contribution consumer antiseptics make relative to washing with plain soap and water."
Any moves by the FDA could affect hundreds of products that are on store shelves: Manufacturers have introduced 253 antibacterial products in the U.S. so far this year. Last year, there were 322 new products, according to Datamonitor's Productscan Online, a new-products database. Antibacterial products generally cost about the same as their conventional counterparts, though prices can sometimes vary widely.
Some doctors have recommended against the widespread use of antibacterial products for years, arguing that they can lead to the emergence of bacteria that resist antibiotics. In 2000, the American Medical Association recommended that the FDA "expedite its regulation" of antibacterial consumer products that have been linked to resistant bacteria.
The FDA's concerns come against a backdrop of heightened awareness about the potential for drug-resistant bacteria. The incidences of deadly bird flu in Asia, for example, have increased anxiety about infectious diseases overall. Earlier this year, the FDA for the first time banned an antibiotic used in chickens and turkeys because of evidence that its use might lead to pathogens that could withstand drugs used to fight human illness.
In the documents released Monday, the FDA said it found no medical studies that showed a link between a specific consumer antibacterial product and a decline in infection rates. Indeed, one major study found little difference between washing with soap and using an antimicrobial product. However, the agency said that the data about links to resistant strains of bacteria are "conflicting and unclear." The worries raised by researchers center largely on triclosan, an ingredient in a number of antibacterial products.
The agency also raised concerns about the environmental impact of some antibacterial cleansers, which may hurt some algae and fish and break down into a harmful contaminant. Another potential fear -- which the FDA said was "controversial" -- was that using too many antibacterial products may prevent people from being exposed to routine bacteria, weakening the development of their immune systems and leading to asthma and allergies.
Makers of the antibacterial products strongly defended them in filings to the agency. Manufacturers said that the cleansers' effects on the environment are limited, and there is no solid evidence that their products lead to resistant bacteria in real-world conditions. Moreover, they said, monitoring systems are in place to pick up such problems if they arise.
Manufacturers also stood by their individual products. "We're not aware of any evidence linking the use of Safeguard to drug resistance in bacteria," said Laurie Steuri, a spokeswoman for Procter & Gamble Co., which makes the Safeguard line of antibacterial soaps. A spokeswoman for Pfizer, which markets Purell to consumers, said, "We definitely believe there is benefit to consumers."
Still, many medical experts disagree. Stuart Levy, a researcher at Tufts University and president of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics, says products with alcohol and bleaches aren't worrisome, but chemicals that don't quickly evaporate or break down -- including triclosan -- are. Triclosan, he says, has been linked to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in lab tests. Use of such products by healthy households should be limited, he says, unless their manufacturers can prove concrete health benefits.
Disease By Design: 1918 "Spanish" Flu Resurrection Creates Major Safety and Security Risks
The
Sunshine Project
The resurrection of 1918 influenza has plunged the world closer to a flu pandemic and to a biodefense race scarcely separable from an offensive one, according to the Sunshine Project, a biological weapons watchdog.
"There was no compelling reason to recreate 1918 flu and plenty of good reasons not to. Instead of a dead bug, now there are live 1918 flu types in several places, with more such strains sure to come in more places," says Sunshine Project Director Edward Hammond, "The US government has done a great misdeed by endorsing and encouraging the deliberate creation of extremely dangerous new viruses. The 1918 experiments will be replicated and adapted, and the ability to perform them will proliferate, meaning that the possibility of man-made disaster, either accidental or deliberate, has risen for the entire world."
The 1918 experiments are part of the US biodefense program and are of no practical value in responding to outbreaks of "bird flu" (H5N1). The 1918 virus is a different type (H1N1) of influenza than "bird flu". 1918 flu is more than eighty five years old and no longer exists in nature, posing no natural threat. While it is reasonable to determine the genetic sequence of 1918 and other extinct influenza strains, there is no valid reason to recreate the virulent virus, as the risks far outweigh the benefit.
But the most significant story isn't Tumpey, Taubenberger, and colleagues. It is the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) attitude about the experiments and its implications. "The biggest news about resurrecting 1918 flu is the US government's enthusiastic embrace of designer disease and the impact that it will have on our future." says Hammond, "By encouraging genetic riffs on influenza and other viruses with the explicit intent of building more dangerous pathogens, CDC is fueling the gathering dangers of competition to discover the worst possibilities of biotechnology applied to bioweapons agents. Some might do it just to keep up with the Americans, resulting in a further blurring of defense and offense and heightening the biological mistrust evident in US foreign policy.
In addition to the potentially broad damage to international security and cooperation in the biological sciences if novel diseases continue to be created, the 1918 experiments heighten the chance that a flu lab will be the source of the next pandemic.
CDC says that it plans to keep its vials of 1918 flu under close guard in one place. But that's a red herring according to the Sunshine Project. Influenza with as many as five 1918 flu genes, and which are potentially pandemic, have already been handled at labs in at least four places other than CDC, including labs in Athens, GA, Winnipeg, MB (Canada), Seattle, WA, and Madison, WI. With the exception of the Canadian lab, none of these facilities has maximum (BSL-4) biological containment, and it is a virtual certainty that more labs will begin 1918 flu work now.
In fact, the only possible source of a new 1918 influenza outbreak is a laboratory. The situation of the 1918 flu is not dissimilar to SARS, whose natural transmission is believed to have been halted. The experience with SARS accidents is chilling: It has escaped three different labs to date. A 1918 influenza escape would be very likely to take a higher human toll. The US biodefense program has also had a number of lab accidents since 2002, including mishandling of anthrax and plague and laboratory-acquired infections of tularemia. In Russia, a researcher contracted ebola and died last year.
Importantly, human error and equipment failures aren't the only ways for a disease agent to escape a lab - something vividly illustrated by the anthrax letters in the US four years ago. Unlike anthrax, however, 1918 influenza would transmit from human to human.
"We are no safer from a pandemic today than yesterday. In fact, we're in greater danger, not only from influenza; but from the failure of the US to come to grips with and address the threats posed by the research it sponsors, in terms of legislation, ethics, and self-restraint." concludes Hammond.

A Natural Approach To Treating & Preventing Dry Eye Syndrome
by Dr. Ben Kim
Over the years, I've noticed that a growing number of people are reporting "dry eyes" during my initial evaluations. The most common complaints are burning, stinging, and scratching sensations. People who wear contacts often report that their eyes feel unusually uncomfortable.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's highly advisable that you address the root causes of dry eyes, as chronic dry eyes can actually leave small abrasions on the surface of your eyes.
The most common cause of dry eyes is a lack of tears, which are needed for proper lubrication of your eyes, as well as to wash away foreign bodies and waste particles.
Other common causes of dry eyes include:
- A dry living or working environment
- Exposure to cigarette smoke - first or second-hand
- Regular use of cold or allergy medications
- A problem with your eyelids or eyes, such as a drooping eyelid (ptosis) or bulging eyes (exophthalmos)
- Sjogren's syndrome, which comes with dry mucous membranes
A recent study out of Harvard reports that people who eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can lower their chances of experiencing dry eyes by as much as 68 percent. Interestingly, people who eat a higher ratio of omega-6 fatty acids compared to omega-3 fatty acids can actually double their risk of developing dry eye syndrome.
This is yet another facet of our health that can be improved by eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and negatively affected by eating a diet that promotes a high omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio.
Healthy foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include:
- walnuts
- purslane
- ground flax seeds
- cod liver oil
- cold-water fish that are typically low in mercury, such as wild salmon and sardines
Beyond addressing your intake of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, here are some additional steps that you can take to help prevent and reverse dry eye syndrome:
- Use a humidifier in the winter if you live in an area that requires indoor heating
- Whenever possible, avoid air conditioning, second-hand smoke, and direct wind.
- Strive to avoid regular use of contact lenses
- Completely close and rest your eyes at regular intervals
Genetically Engineered Crops "Ruin Fields for 15 Years"
by Geoffrey Lean
GM crops contaminate the countryside for up to 15 years after they have been harvested, startling
new government research shows.
The findings cast a cloud over the prospects of growing the modified crops in Britain, suggesting
that farmers who try them out for one season will find fields blighted for a decade and a half.
Financed by GM companies and Margaret Beckett's Department of the Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs, the report effectively torpedoes the Government's strategy for introducing GM oilseed rape
to this country.
Ministers have stipulated that the crops should not be grown until rules
are worked out to enable them to "co-exist" with conventional ones. But the
research shows that this is effectively impossible.
The study, published by the Royal Society, examined five sites across England
and Scotland where modified oilseed rape has been cultivated, and found significant
amounts of GM plants growing even
after the sites had been returned to ordinary crops. It concludes that the
research reveals "a
potentially serious problem associated with the temporal persistence of rape
seeds in soil."
The researchers found that nine years after a single modified crop, an average of two GM rape plants
would grow in every square metre of an affected field. After 15 years, this came down to one plant
per square metre - still enough to break the EC limits on permissible GM contamination.
Last night Pete Riley, the director of GM Freeze, said; "It is becoming clearer
and clearer that it is going to be impossible to grow GM crops in Britain."
A Perfect Time For Enjoying Fall Fruits!
by Nathan
Boyd Let’s face it; it’s difficult for anyone of us not to enjoy the autumn season. The weather become refreshingly cooler and the days grow increasingly shorter while high in the night skies, the constellation Orion becomes more prominent. School spirits soar with the excitement of the football season and communities gather for the celebration of our fall festivals. Children of all ages delight in the practice of trick-or-treating at Halloween and during the last Thursday of every November, families will gather to give Thanks for the blessings in our lives. Everywhere you travel around this country, autumn is simply a special time of the year for sharing ourselves with our friends, families and members of our community.
With therefore no small amount of coincidence, as autumn was also the season of the harvest, we also find that many of the fruits of this season are also central to many of our celebratory practices as well. Cranberries are a staple item for our Thanksgiving meals with folklore even suggesting that this practice began with the Native American Indians bringing it to the first Thanksgiving. You can find the ever-popular apple celebrated at major food festivals during this time of year in the states of New York, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Washington. And certainly, Halloween wouldn’t be quite the same if we did not go bobbing for apples or carve Jack O’Lanterns out of pumpkins. So in further celebration of this wonderful time of year, let’s take a moment to learn some facts about two of our favorite fall fruits: the apple and the pumpkin.
The Apple
The ultimate fall fruit, apples and autumn seem to have been perfectly made for each other. There are about 7,500 varieties of apples grown throughout the world, with approximately 2,500 of those varieties grown within the United States alone. Apples are grown in all 50 states, with 100 of those varieties cultivated commercially, and they come in virtually every shade imagined of red, green and yellow. And as Americans, we certainly love our apples. Consumers here in the United States have eaten an average of over 45 pounds of apples and processed apple products yearly, with 61% of those apples consumed as fresh fruits. China, however, has us beat when it comes to total apple production; they are the largest producer of apples in the world and have grown as much as 1.2 billion bushels of this famed fruit a year. Nutritionally, the apple is an outstanding value for your money. They’re inexpensive, delicious, easy to carry, and yet are low in calories and high in fiber. They’re even fat and sodium free! When you do eat one, however, please do so with the skin left on. The skin contains a high concentration of the apple’s fiber and vitamins such as vitamin C. Just be sure to always wash your apple first (or any other fruit for that matter) to rinse off any dirt, oils, and insecticides that may remain. If you’re not sure how to find a good apple when shopping, then just remember to first look for those apples without any bruises or broken skin. Flicking your finger against the apple near the stalk can test the ripeness of the apple. If the sound you hear is dull, then it’s perfect for eating. If you’re not going to eat your apples right away, then try to store them in a cool, dry place, or within a plastic bag inside your refrigerator.
By the way, the U.S. Apple Association is promoting an “Apples for Santa” program to further help encourage healthy eating practices during the holidays. With this program, they are encouraging children to leave Santa an apple on Christmas Eve instead of a plate of sweets.
Please visit their website at:
http://www.usapple.org/educators/forsanta/index.shtml
The Pumpkin
Could you even imagine Thanksgiving dinner without pumpkin pie? Or Halloween celebrations without the Jack O’Lantern? Heck, could you even imagine the classic “Charlie Brown” cartoons without the “Great Pumpkin”? Somehow it just wouldn’t be autumn here in the U.S. without seeing those great orange gourds decorating both front lawns and table centerpieces. But the pumpkin have served many more purposes than simply being mere holiday ornaments and have actually enjoyed a lengthy history with our ancestors here in the Americas. While roasted pumpkin seeds are known to make delicious snacks in themselves, the Native Americans were known to have used the pumpkin seeds for both food and medicinal purposes. The Native Americans had even used dried strips of pumpkins for mats. The colonists, meanwhile, were the ones who developed the precursor to our pumpkin pies by filling the inside of sliced off sections of pumpkin with milk, honey and spices and then baking them in hot ashes. Of interest, however, is the fact that the colonists had also been known to use pumpkin as an ingredient for pie crusts and not necessarily the filling.
Pumpkins are an outstanding source of the antioxidant beta-carotene, which is a precursor to Vitamin A; and a one-half cup of canned pumpkin can even provide you with an enormous five grams of fiber as well. Pumpkin is also a good source of potassium and is cholesterol free. If shopping for a pumpkin to cook, your best bet is in purchasing a “pie pumpkin”, which is typically smaller than the pumpkins used for carving Jack O’Lanterns. Avoid pumpkins with any cracks, blemishes and moldy spots and look for ones that are firm and evenly colored instead. While there are many resources available for recipes that utilize pumpkin, just keep in mind that ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon will always compliment the flavor of pumpkin very nicely.
