Intestinal Parasites: Are They Bugging You?
By: Dr. Edward F.Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND,DACBN

The human intestines contain a complex assortment of microbial organisms, healthy bacteria, yeast, and intestinal flora. These organisms work together to help the body absorb nutrients and repel foreign toxins. This relationship is symbiotic, benefiting both human beings and these intestinal organisms. Most people also have other organisms, called parasites, throughout their bodies, that are not as beneficial. A parasite is an organism that lives and feeds off of another organism, called a host. A parasite that makes its home in the human intestines can cause constipation, anal itching, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, anemia, malnutrition, cramps and more.

What Are Intestinal Parasites?
Intestinal parasites that remain prevalent in the United States include Enterobius vermicularis, Giardia lamblia, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, and Entamoeba histolytica.

Enterobius vermicularis
This parasite is commonly referred to as pinworm or roundworm. It has the largest geographic range of any of the other parasites. Humans are the only known host for this parasite, and over two hundred million people worldwide are infected.

These parasitic worms live primarily in the large intestine, but eggs are often laid just outside the anus. This not only causes itching and irritation to the host, but it also increases the chances for transmission through shared toilet seat use.

The cellophane tape test is often used to confirm the presence of pinworms. This test consists of touching tape to the anal area several times, and then examining it under a microscope for parasitic eggs. The test should be conducted first thing in the morning on at least three consecutive days. This technique can increase the test's sensitivity to roughly 90 percent.

Giardia lamblia
This pear shaped protozoan is the cause of a wide variety of digestive disorders and gastrointestinal complaints. It is the most common parasitic infection in the world, and it is second in the United States to pinworm.

It is spread mainly by fecal-oral contamination, therefore it is more prevalent in countries with a poor sanitation system. It is resistant to the chlorine levels in normal tap water and survives well in cold mountain streams.

Giardia attach to the muscle wall of the duodenum and proximal jejunum and grow with the help if bile, carbohydrates, and low oxygen levels. They can cause dyspepsia, malabsorption, and diarrhea. Your health care provider can use special antigen assay tests called enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or immunofluorescence to detect the presence of Giardia.

Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus
A. duodenale and N. americanus are two species of hookworm that are found commonly in humans. Once these parasites enter a human host they travel through the circulation system until they reach alveolar capillaries of the lungs. Inside the lungs, the parasites climb the bronchial tree and are swallowed with secretions. Six weeks after the initial infection, mature parasitic worms will attach to the small intestine to feed, and reproduce eggs.

The blood loss caused by hookworms can produce a dangerous type of anemia. Fecal examination is the most common method of hookworm diagnosis.

Entamoeba histolytica
This protozoan is spread by poor hygiene practices in food preparation, and it commonly affects people who have a weakened immune system. Once ingested, these parasites hatch into trophozoites in the small intestine and continue moving down the digestive tract to the colon. They can also invade the intestinal mucosa and spread in the bloodstream to the liver, lung, and brain.

E. histolytica can cause digestive disorders, colitis, fatigue, weight loss, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and fever. Fecal examination is the most common method of diagnosis, however the presence of amoebas may become negative after a year of infection.

Symptoms of Intestinal Parasites
A parasite can live inside its host for years without ever making its presence known. Or its may cause symptoms that are so vague they are difficult to diagnose. But the following symptoms may indicate an intestinal parasitic infection:

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Gas and bloating
  • Heartburn or chest pain
  • Food allergies
  • Sudden changes in bowel habits (from constipation to diarrhea)
  • Gurgling, rumbling, or other stomach noises unrelated to eating or hunger
  • Flu-like symptoms (congestion, coughing, fever)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Constant hunger
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anemia
  • Bloody stools
  • Sore mouth and gums
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Headaches

Mad Cow Madness: USDA Lies

www.NewsTarget.com

Welcome to Mad Cow Madness! If you've ever wondered what's really going on with mad cow disease in the United States, here's the real story. Let's talk about this downer cow that was recently confirmed as having mad cow disease. It only took... let's see... seven months for the USDA to confirm that this cow had mad cow disease? Only seven months! Your taxpayer dollars are hard at work...

Here's my opinion of what happened: First, the cow gets mad cow disease, probably from consuming spinal cord tissue and brain parts of other dead cows that are typically fed to cattle as part of the everyday beef operations here in the United States. This was a Texas cow, born and raised somewhere in the United States, it seems, and slaughtered in Texas. Turns out it was a downer cow, which means it couldn't walk. So where do they send this cow? Well, to the pet food slaughterhouse, of course. That's where many of these diseased cows end up going -- right into the pet food products for your Fido.

If you've ever wondered what's in those cans that you're feeding your pets, this is the answer -- dead cows that are unfit for human consumption. And some of them, it appears, have mad cow disease. Although there's no indication that this particular cow made it into the pet food supply, I wouldn't be surprised if other diseased cows frequently get into our pets' food.

But, getting back to this particular cow, when it was a downer, the USDA ordered a test to see if it had mad cow disease. The first test came back positive. So, of course, the USDA, which has seemingly gone way out of its way to make sure that no one learns the truth about mad cow disease in the United States, ordered its own second test, and gee, what a surprise! The second test came back negative.

We see this happening quite frequently -- the second test being negative. They say, "Well, the first test must have been a false positive," and then my theory is that they find some way to distort the test and falsify the results. Sure enough, the second test comes back negative -- no mad cow disease. If you test a cow enough times, you'll eventually get a negative result... especially if you intend for the results to come out that way.

Seeing this testing fiasco unfold, one of the watchdog arms of the Department of Agriculture decided the agency had better take some action to protect the integrity of the U.S. beef industry, otherwise the whole thing could collapse when the truth finally came out about mad cow disease. So it decided to order a third test of this cow, and the third test was conducted -- guess where? England. Why? Because they probably couldn't trust the USDA testers in the United States. They knew that the test would be falsified again if it were tested in the United States, so they had to send it out of the country. (That's how corrupt operations are here in the U.S.) The England test, no surprise, came back positive.

Now, this whole process took seven months -- seven months to find out that this cow was positive for mad cow disease, during which time the USDA was proclaiming that U.S. herds were completely safe, explaining, essentially, "There's no danger. Our testing procedure is highly accurate, we keep full track of everything and we know where all these cows are," and other such nonsense. All this time, of course, the agency was sitting on a mad cow that still had not been properly tested.

Getting cow parts mixed up

It turns out the USDA even had a hard time figuring out where this particular cow came from. Why is that? I' m going to quote a news story here. It says, "The cow's type of breed was mislabeled, possibly because the animal had been heavily soiled with manure and its tissues were mixed with tissues from other cows." Wait a minute, here -- wait a minute!

Is this saying they couldn't even identify the breed of this cow because its tissues were mixed with other tissues? What does that mean? That the cow parts were all dismembered and put in a giant barrel, and they were looking at that and trying to figure out if there was a whole cow there, what breed was it and where it came from? Please tell me this isn't how the USDA tracks diseased cows...

When they went back to the owner of that cow, the owner said he didn't sell that breed of cow. The USDA then admitted that after the tissues were processed there was "some mixing." Mixing? Do they just put all these dead cows in a big grinder? Some mixing, that's what they say. And this is supposed to be the highly accurate cattle tracking system used by the USDA that keeps the public safe, by the way.

According to this news story, "Parts from the diseased animals and four other cows were supposed to be kept in separate waste barrels, but some of the waste was combined." So basically, all these cows are just mixed and matched. When they have a downer cow, they put it into the grinder, the same as any other downer cow, and then they tell us, "This cow didn't make it into the food supply. Don't worry. You're safe, and your pets are safe. None of this is in the food supply! Don't worry about it!"

The other relevant fact here is that cows are moved across the country. A cow could be born in one state, fed in another state, weighed in another state and then slaughtered somewhere else. All they know is that this cow, at some point in its life, was a Texas cow. They don't know where it came from, and they don't have any evidence that it came from outside the United States. So this is one of the first cases in which the U.S. cattle industry can't blame Canada.

Keep in mind, the USDA declared this cow to be free of mad cow disease. They said, "Don't worry, this is safe." That makes you wonder -- why didn't they put it into the pet food supply? See, I think they probably did, and I think they're just telling us whatever they want us to hear. I think pets are consuming this all across the country right now. Who knows how many cans of pet food that cow got into with all the mixing and matching? And remember, you can't kill mad cow disease by cooking the food. If the prions get into the pet food cans, it's going to infect the pets, regardless of how well the food has been cooked.

Many countries still ban U.S. beef due to lack of testing

Taiwan, of course, banned the importation of mad cow disease following the first case of the disease in this country, and then when they heard about this one, they banned it again, and that drives the U.S. beef industry nuts. The Agriculture Department says they're talking with Taiwan authorities "to assure them of the safety of U.S. beef and that our interlocking safeguards did work as they should have worked to protect human and animal health." Oh my -- we have a system that's ironclad around here! Apparently, we know exactly where the cows are... that is, except when we mix and match their parts and lose track of where they came from and can't even figure out what breed they are.

Did you know we have a system of "interlocking safeguards" where we don't even test all the cattle? ...A system in which the USDA actually attacks cattle ranchers and beef companies that want to conduct their own mad cow testing and where the USDA (in my opinion) falsifies these test results or gets them wrong so frequently that the Inspector General has to come along and send the results out to another country to get accurate lab results? This is our system of "interlocking safeguards" in this country? What a whitewash!

I'll tell you what, there is mad cow disease in this country right now -- I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- there's more mad cow disease out there, and the USDA is engaged in a massive cover-up. The agency is whitewashing this issue; they're trying to tell people that the beef supply is safe, when in fact, there's mad cow disease in existence right now across this country. And now we have proof of it with this confirmed mad cow. Finally, the USDA actually has one more confirmed case of mad cow disease right here from U.S. herds. But of course, that's no reason for consumers to stop buying beef, we're all told. Keep eating that cow flesh, folks, and don't worry about mad cow disease: your government is protecting you.

The coming collapse of the U.S. beef industry

The U.S. beef industry is headed for quite a downfall and a global discrediting when the truth finally comes out about mad cow disease being prevalent in U.S. herds. I don't think we've even seen the tip of the iceberg on this issue. There's a lot more mad cow disease out there in my opinion, based on what I've read and heard from cattle ranchers. There's a massive cover-up underway, and it's probably going to take some people dying before the U.S. beef industry has the sense to mandate mad cow disease testing for all cattle. People are going to die, and the beef industry is going to be in shambles. They're going to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

Why? Because they refuse to tell the truth! They refuse to enact safety standards that other countries now have as routine! They refuse to test all the cows. The USDA just doesn't want to tell people anything, it seems. It didn't want to tell them where the cow came from. There's all this secrecy. You know, if this is supposed to be an open system of interlocking safeguards, why doesn't the USDA stand up and tell us the truth? Why doesn' t it admit, "Yeah, we need to test this cow. Let's get it tested. Let's get the truth out there. Let's tell people everything they need to know -- where it came from, what ranch it was from, why people are safe and why we're testing all the cows now." Why doesn't the USDA do that?

How to keep your head buried in the sand

I'll tell you why: they don't want to test the herds in this country, because if they did mandatory testing across the board, there would be, in my estimation, thousands of cases of mad cow disease found. I believe they don't want to do mandatory testing because to do so would reveal just how prominent this disease is in U.S. cattle. That's my opinion, and I think that's why they don't want mandatory testing.

Think about it -- if there's no mad cow disease in this country at all, which they claim, then wouldn't it make sense to test all the cattle and reassure the U.S. market and the world markets that this is all safe beef? Just test all the cows, and you could reassure everybody. You would open up new multi-million dollar markets all around the world that have closed their markets to U.S. beef since the discovery of mad cow disease. It simply makes good economic sense.

Wouldn't the USDA want to open those markets for U.S. cattle ranchers? Why wouldn't it conduct the testing of all cows to prove that the cows are safe? The answer, again, is because to conduct this testing would reveal how widespread mad cow disease really is in this country. And that's why the USDA has to continue to falsify its own tests, in my view, to make sure that if a cow ever tests positive, they can falsify the second test and make sure it comes back negative. That's why they outlaw independent testing of cows in this country. They won't let companies run their own mad cow tests. How's that for public safety? Let me say this again: it is ILLEGAL for a rancher to test his own cows for this disease.

That's so bizarre. It's a safety test -- why wouldn't you want more companies to run safety tests? Why wouldn't you want more slaughterhouses having greater safety practices in this country? Again, the answer is because you don't want these companies discovering just how much mad cow disease there really is around here. The USDA, one of the great misguided agencies of modern government, has given us the Food Guide Pyramid that offers us nutritionally worthless advice, heavily influenced by private industry, especially the dairy industry, and now the agency claims to be protecting us from mad cow disease (but really is just protecting the cattle industry).

No surprise there -- a lot of people in high-level positions at the USDA are from the cattle industry. It's similar to the FDA, where top officials are ex-drug company executives. It's that old revolving door between private industry and big government -- serving your interests, of course!

So what's the real story here? The real story is just as I predicted -- we have mad cow disease in this country, and I think we just have the tip of the iceberg here. Wait until the truth really comes out about this -- then you're going to see some mad cow madness hitting the fan in a very big way. And by that time, nobody will be able to tell where all the parts came from.

Learn To Forgive Yourself

By Mark Victor Hansen

Many authors and speakers talk about the power of forgiveness. Forgiving others for the wrongs they have done to us is an important step for living our best life. Some people do things, consciously or not, that lead to years of pain and turmoil in the lives of others. Forgiveness allows us to deal with a situation and move past it. Dwelling on past wrongs will only stop us from living in the present and preparing an abundant future for ourselves.

But what do you do when the person who has hurt you the most is someone you've nevër considered forgiving? What if that person is you?

Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. When you do make a mistake it is perfectly fine to acknowledge it. But, please, don't hold it against yourself for the rest of your life.

If the mistake you made has hurt someone in some way -- apologize. Really apologize. Acknowledge the other person's feelings, say you're sorry, ask for their forgiveness. Then forgive yourself.

If the mistake you made has hurt only you -- perhaps you hate your body, don't think you're good enough, etc. -- apologize to yourself. Really apologize. Acknowledge you've been too hard on yourself, say you're sorry, ask yourself for forgiveness. Then forgive yourself.

When you make mistakes, learn from them. Show your conviction to learning from your mistakes by not making the same one twice. Live consciously.
Forgive yourself and do better the next time around.

Ask wisely, with love, for everything you want.

Action Step

In closing this week, I'd like to offer an exercise to complete in the week ahead:

Sometimes it's harder to forgive ourselves than to forgive others who have wronged us. But it is just as important for inner peace and tranquility.

Take out a journal or notebook and ask yourself these questïons:

-- Do I use my inner dialogue to beat myself up mentally and spiritually?
-- Do I not allow myself happiness because I believe, deep down inside, I don't deserve to be happy?
-- Am I holding myself back from relationships because I believe I'll just screw them up -- repeating patterns in the past?
-- Am I settling for a career, relationship, etc. because I believe I'm not worthy of anything better?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questïons it is time to make a change. Acknowledge what you have done to yourself in the past. Forgive yourself. Write down a declaration that from this day forward you will make a conscious effort to treat yourself (and others) with dignity and respect, and love yourself unconditionally.

You deserve the best. Start treating yourself well today!

Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series, has for more than 25 years, uniquely focused on the vital elements of human behavior that most affect our personal and professional lives and has influenced society's top leaders and the general public on a global scale.

How Many Insect Parts and Rodent Hairs are Allowed in Your Food?

by SixWise.com

How about a little rat hair with your peanut butter? A fly head with your macaroni and cheese? Though it may sound disgusting, these things and other gross filth the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calls natural contaminants are indeed allowed and present in your food.

In fact, so common are these contaminants that the FDA has published a booklet detailing the so-called Food Defect Action Levels, which were needed, according to the FDA, … because it is economically impractical to grow, harvest, or process raw products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects.

Surely, anyone who' s ever collected lettuce from a home garden, picked apples right from the tree or strawberries right from the vine has gotten the unpleasant surprise of finding a spider, worm or other natural contaminant in their harvest. But in these cases, we' re more accepting, or at least, more expecting, of finding an unwanted guest, and we' re free to inspect each item for ourselves.

But what about when it comes to processed foods? Is there really any way to know how many insect parts have been ground right up with the rest of the ingredients? Probably not.

Think insect parts and rodent hairs are more of a rarity? Think again. A University of Ohio fact sheet estimates that we eat from one to two pounds of insects each year, and without knowing it.

This is Gross, but is it Dangerous?

Quite the contrary. "They're actually pretty healthy," says Dr. Philip Nixon, an entomologist at the University of Illinois, in regard to insects, "If we were more willing to accept certain defect levels such as insects and insect parts, growers could reduce pesticide usage. Some of the spraying that goes on is directly related to the aesthetics of our food."

The FDA agrees that it' s reasonable to accept more natural defects in our food in lieu of increasing the amount of pesticides sprayed on them:

"The alternative to establishing natural defect levels in some foods would be to insist on increased utilization of chemical substances to control insects, rodents and other natural contaminants. The alternative is not satisfactory because of the very real danger of exposing consumers to potential hazards from residues of these chemicals, as opposed to the aesthetically unpleasant but harmless natural and unavoidable defects."

However, there may be one health area that' s been overlooked. According to Judy Tidwell, an economic service specialist at a state social services office in the Southeast United States who has struggled with allergies, trace amounts of insect parts that have been ground into food items ranging from strawberry jam to spaghetti sauce can affect people with allergies and asthma.

We throw away the products that we see are infested. Just think how many we consume because we didn't notice they were infested. Ingesting insect material may cause stomach disorders, as well as allergic reactions, she says.

How Many Rodent Hairs and Insect Parts Are In …

Here is a very brief sampling of the FDA' s Food Defect Action Level list. They begin investigation when foods reach the action level they' ve set. According to the FDA, typical foods contain about 10 percent of the action level, but others say they contain more like 40 percent.

CHOCOLATE AND CHOCOLATE LIQUOR

  • Insect filth: Average is 60 or more insect fragments per 100 grams when 6 100-gram subsamples are examined OR any 1 subsample contains 90 or more insect fragments

  • Rodent filth: Average is 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams in 6 100-gram subsamples examined OR any 1 subsample contains 3 or more rodent hairs

CITRUS FRUIT JUICES, CANNED

  • Insects and insect eggs: 5 or more Drosophila and other fly eggs per 250 ml or 1 or more maggots per 250 ml

RED FISH AND OCEAN PERCH

  • Parasites: 3% of the fillets examined contain 1 or more parasites accompanied by pus pockets

MACARONI AND NOODLE PRODUCTS

  • Insect filth: Average of 225 insect fragments or more per 225 grams in 6 or more subsamples

  • Rodent filth: Average of 4.5 rodent hairs or more per 225 grams in 6 or more subsamples

PEANUT BUTTER

  • Insect filth: Average of 30 or more insect fragments per 100 grams

  • Rodent filth: Average of 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams

POPCORN

  • Rodent filth: 1 or more rodent excreta pellets are found in 1 or more subsamples, and 1 or more rodent hairs are found in 2 or more other subsamples OR 2 or more rodent hairs per pound and rodent hair is found in 50% or more of the subsamples OR 20 or more gnawed grains per pound and rodent hair is found in 50% or more of the subsamples

WHEAT FLOUR

  • Insect filth: Average of 75 or more insect fragments per 50 grams

  • Rodent filth: Average of 1 or more rodent hairs per 50 grams

Can these things be avoided? To avoid all unsavory food components, it seems, would be to stop eating all together. And perhaps we' re just being too squeamish. After all, as Dr. Manfred Kroger, a professor of food science at Pennsylvania State University, says, "Let's face it, much of our food comes from nature, and nature is not perfect."

EPA Scientists & Workers Call for an End to Water Fluoridation

EPA Scientists & Workers Call for an End to Water Fluoridation Because of Cancer Risk

From: Environment News Service

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EPA UNIONS CALL FOR NATIONWIDE MORATORIUM ON FLUORIDATION, CONGRESSIONAL HEARING ON ADVERSE EFFECTS, YOUTH CANCER COVER UP

WASHINGTON, DC, August 30, 2005 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- Eleven EPA employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals of the Civil Service have called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country, and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people. The unions acted following revelations of an apparent cover-up of evidence from Harvard School of Dental Medicine linking fluoridation with elevated risk of a fatal bone cancer in young boys.

The unions sent letters to key Congressional committees asking Congress to legislate a moratorium pending a review of all the science on the risks and benefits of fluoridation. The letters cited the weight of evidence supporting a classification of fluoride as a likely human carcinogen, which includes other epidemiology results similar to those in the Harvard study, animal studies, and biological reasons why fluoride can reasonably be expected to cause the bone cancer - osteosarcoma - seen in young boys and test animals.

The unions also pointed out recent work by Richard Maas of the Environmental Quality Institute, University of North Carolina that links increases in lead levels in drinking water systems to use of silicofluoride fluoridating agents with chloramines disinfectant.

The letter to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson asked him to issue a public warning in the form of an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking setting the health-based drinking water standard for fluoride at zero, as it is for all known or probable human carcinogens, pending a recommendation from a National Academy of Sciences' National Research Council committee. That committee's work is not expected to be done before 2006.

The unions also asked Congress and EPA's enforcement office, or the Department of Justice, to look into reasons why the Harvard study director, Chester Douglass, failed to report the seven-fold increased risk seen in the work he oversaw, and instead wrote to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the federal agency that funded the Harvard study, saying there was no link between fluoridation and osteosarcoma. Douglass sent the same negative report to the National Research Council committee studying possible changes in EPA's drinking water standards for fluoride.

The unions who signed the letters represent EPA employees from across the nation, including laboratory scientists in Ohio, Oklahoma and Michigan, regulatory support scientists and other workers at EPA headquarters in Washington, D.C. and science and regulatory workers in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and San Francisco.

They are affiliated with the National Treasury Employees Union, the American Federation of Government Employees, Engineers and Scientists of California/International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, and the National Association of Government Employee/Service Employees International Union.

USA Citizens can easily back-up the 7,000 EPA 'career employees.' Consider, you and your family need CLEAN & SAFE Drinking Water, every day. This is your opportunity to back those 7000+ EPA union members that care about scientific integrity and exposing the truth about 'corporate hazardous waste fluorosilicates' being metered into our drinking waters. Their common sense demand for a 'moratorium on fluoridation' along with Congressional Investigation incl. 'under oath' hearings is critical!

We, the undersigned, join with members of eleven EPA unions in their call for an immediate Congressional act placing a national moratorium on water fluoridation pending a full Congressional investigation into this public policy, which affects - directly and indirectly - every resident of the United States.

A Deadly Trade Secret In Our Food

Luise Light, MS, EdD

Health authorities sound alarm about a toxin in food – but only tell us part of the story.

It's not often that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) alert the world to dangers of an industrial chemical in processed food capable of causing cancer, nerve damage and reproductive abnormalities. The UN agencies urged people to stop eating starchy foods commercially made by frying, roasting and baking until levels of the hazardous chemical, acrylamide, are reduced or eliminated.

Three years ago, Swedish scientists published a study that showed significant levels of acrylamide in food products after commercial, high temperature frying, roasting and baking of potatoes and grain products. Processed foods with dangerously high levels of acrylamide were found in many of the most popular foods consumed in North America by all age groups, including children. High levels were found in: breakfast cereals, potato and corn chips, French fries, bread, rolls, pizza and pastries, among other foods.

International alarm followed from the discovery that high acrylamide levels in foods greatly exceeded the EPA allowance for the chemical in drinking water. For example, a large order of French fries was found to have 300 times more acrylamide than what EPA allows in a glass of water. Acrylamide is a potent nerve toxin that affects male reproduction and causes birth defects and cancer in animals, and is considered a probable human carcinogen.

Polyacrylamide is a non-toxic material that, when exposed to heat and light, readily breaks down to un-polymerized acrylamide, which is a neurotoxin. Polyacrylamide is extensively used worldwide in many industrial processes because it is highly soluble and, through gelling and binding actions, stabilizes flows of materials. Widely used as an additive in water purification systems, other uses are in the pulp and paper industry, oil-drilling and mining, permanent press clothing manufacture, and contact lens manufacturing. The chemical is also used as a gelling agent in the making of explosives. Acrylamide resins coat home appliances, building materials, and automotive parts, and are used in formulating cosmetics, soaps, hair grooming products, dental fixatives, latex thickeners, and adhesives.

Residues on foods come from extensive use of polyacrylamide in pesticide formulations and soil treatments and they also may be responsible for acrylamide contamination of processed foods reported by Swedish scientists. The alert sounded by international health agencies suggested that the Swedish findings probably resulted from chemical reactions in processing and the release of chemicals during high temperature cooking and frying of foods. But that wasn' t the whole story.

The WHO/FAO release didn' t mention that polyacrylamide is a well-known additive to commercial pesticides. The Monsanto herbicide, Roundup© (glyphosate), is mixed with polyacylamide and likely to release acrylamide when exposed to heat and light in the field, according to Professor Joe Cummins of the British Institute for Science and Society.

Crops genetically modified to be herbicide-tolerant of the pesticide Roundup©, and the use of the herbicide to prepare soils for normal (non-GM) crops results in the release of acrylamide into the environment. Additives used in herbicide mixtures are trade secrets in North America so information on polyacrylamides in pesticides has not been available until now. Monsanto' s Roundup© is the primary glyphosate herbicide used in the world today. Monsanto' s herbicides are all around us, and we can guess that acrylamide is, too. Here' s how Monsanto describes the widespread use of its product:

Monsanto' s herbicide products include more than 90 glyphosate-based herbicides globally, including Roundup agricultural herbicides and Roundup branded turf and ornamental products. These products can be used to control weeds on the farm, the golf course and in home gardens, create sustainable agricultural systems that preserve topsoil, help retain soil moisture, and provide a valuable tool for integrated pest management programs. They can be used to help prepare deforested land for reforestation, reclaim land for grazing or agriculture that has been taken over by weeds, restore wildlife habitats, control roadside vegetation and rid school yards and parks of noxious weeds like poison ivy, among many other uses. (www.monsanto.com)

The UN agencies have called on governments to work with their food industries to significantly lower the level of acrylamide in foods, noting that it is currently technically feasible to do so. However, with health and food agencies emphasizing the importance of consuming more anti-oxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, believed helpful in mitigating the damage from toxic contaminants, will we be exposed to even higher levels of the potent neurotoxin, acrylamide? Furthermore, if there are residues of acrylamide on vegetables, what will be the affects of consuming more vegetables? Neither the USDA nor the EPA has conducted any testing of the health consequences of acrylamide residues on vegetables.

Unless the problem of acrylamide-laced pesticides is tackled, changes in processing and cooking methods are unlikely to make a dent in human exposure to the chemical. A ban on use of polyacrylamide in agriculture, on golf courses, schoolyards and parks is essential. While we' re at it, let' s also ban corporate trade secrets known to be harmful to people and the environment. As Wendell Berry, the great environmentalist, reminds us, The world that is around us is also within us. We are made of it; we drink, eat and breathe it; it is the bone of our bone and the flesh of our flesh.
