ANTHRAX:
SHOULD WE WORRY?
It ‘s now been
nearly a week that we have continually heard of
the devastation that this white powder can supposedly
incur. Each day the "scare" of anthrax seems
to show up in a different part of the country.
Even
though we are constantly reminded by the media
not to panic, biological warfare continues to
be at the top of many casual discussions.
The
most important thing for us to do is something
that we should
already be doing: keeping/getting our bodies
healthy through immune system support. Many
people have
let worry, fear and uncertainty of the future
play havoc with their emotions thus bringing
their
immune system way down. It’s not enough to eat
organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, drink
pure, clean water, etc. We must also deal with
what is deep down inside of us. One way to do
this is to let go of our fear and worry by concentrating
on keeping our bodies and mind healthy.
If you are like
us, you have received countless e-mails in the
last week or so suggesting many ways to deal with
anthrax. Remember: no one has a "magic bullet" for
anthrax…not even the pharmaceutical
companies. It is in our nature to want to "do
something" in order to allow us to feel like

PLANTS:
GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH!
Houseplants do
more than just enhance the beauty of your surroundings,
many actually clean pollutants out of the air
as they add oxygen and humidity to the indoor
environment. New findings suggest, however, that
they may add more than just color and interest.
They also filter the air, and can fight against
the common high-tech ill, sick building disease.
Recent research undertaken by the NASA Space Administration
in America has yielded some very interesting results.
In a test lasting
two years conducted by Dr. B.C. Wolverton at the
Stennis Space Centre in Mississippi it was discovered
that common houseplants are capable of converting
chemical air pollutants into harmless substances.
Ivy, one of the smallest of houseplants, does
an excellent job of cleaning the air of toxins,
especially benzene and TCE. The humble potted
Chrysanthemum is another goodie. You can place
a number of plants around your office/home or
make up a high scoring clean-air cocktail by adding
such plants as Peace Lilies and Parlour Palms.
Better still are various forms of Dracaena, Dracaena
Warnecki and Dracaena Janet Craig are real pollutant
sucking types. Chinese Evergreen and the humble
Philoderdron are also two to watch out for. COMMENT: Most
people spend much of their time in the living
areas and bedrooms of their homes. Place at least
two large plants in these areas…supplement with
smaller plants throughout the remainder of the
house.
WHAT DOES
ORGANIC MEAN?

Organic
is the way food and fiber products are grown
and processed.
The term "organic" on a label stands for the
commitment to agriculture that has a low impact
on the environment.
Organic production does not use toxic chemical
pesticides and fertilizers. Instead the system
works to replenish and maintain the fertility
of the soil. Organic food products are minimally
processed to help retain the natural aspects
of
the food. No artificial ingredients, preservatives,
or irradiation is used in the processing of organic
foods.
All are organic
products pesticide-free?
The word organic
does not mean pesticide-free. Certified organic
products are grown and handled according to strict
standards without toxic chemicals. However, organic
crops are still grown in a world where chemicals
are now detected in all rain and ground water.
Organically grown does not add additional toxic
chemicals and thus is healthier for the environment
and your long-term health.

NATURE’S
MEDICINE--Contact with plants, animals
may have
therapeutic effects

11 — "Nature
is the best medicine," wrote the ancient Greek
philosopher Hippocrates in 400 B.C. Today, in
our urbanized and denatured world, there’s added
meaning to the famous quote, says Dr. Howard Frumkin,
a professor of occupational and environmental
medicine at Emory University’s Rollins School
of Public Health in Atlanta. "If we put ourselves
in beautiful natural places," he says, "we may
find that we feel better and that certain diseases
even run their course faster."
COMMENT: Take
time to get outside and enjoy the beauty
of nature. Walking is a great way to accomplish
this…be aware of your surroundings: plants, trees,
sounds, colors, sky, clouds, breeze…a wonderful
way to "cleanse" the mind and spirit.
THE POTENTIAL
DANGERS OF SUCRALOSE
There's a new
artificial sweetener on the block and it is already
in a wide range of products, some even sold in
health food stores and manufactured by nutritionally-oriented
companies. But is it proven safe? Does it provide
any benefit to the public? Does it help with weight
loss? Are there any long term human studies? Has
it been shown to be safe for the environment?
The answer to all of these questions is unfortunately
a resounding NO.
The
artificial sweetener sucralose, which is sold
under the name
SplendaT, is one of the up-and-coming "next generation" of
high-intensity sugar substitutes. It is non-caloric
and about 600 times sweeter than sucrose (white
table sugar), although it can vary from 320 to
1,000 times sweeter, depending on the food application.
The white crystalline powder tastes like a lot
like sugar, but is more intense in its sweetness.
Sucralose is produced
by chlorinating sugar (sucrose). This involves
chemically changing the structure of the sugar
molecules by substituting three chlorine atoms
for three hydroxyl groups.
Should Sucralose
be Avoided? The Holistic Medicine Web Page cites
the following reasons to avoid sucralose: Pre-approval
tests indicated potential toxicity of sucralose.
There are no *independent* controlled human studies
on sucralose (similar to 15 years ago for aspartame).
There are no long-term (12-24 months) human studies
of sucralose's effects. There is no monitoring
of health effects. It took government agencies
decades to agree that there were countless thousands
of deaths from tobacco. Why? Simply because there
had been no monitoring or epidemiological studies.
Without such monitoring and studies, huge effects
can easily go unnoticed.
COMMENT: The
fact that Sucralose is made by chlorinating
sugar should be a BIG RED FLAG as to its
safety.
Chlorine is a known cancer-causing chemical…need
we say more?
ALMONDS
ARE GOOD FOR YOU
Almonds are probably
the best all-around nuts. Their fat content is
less than most, about 60 percent, and the protein
concentration is nearly 20 percent. The almond
nuts are the fruits of a small tree that grows
nearly thirty feet tall and is abundant in many
areas of the world, including Asia, the Mediterranean,
and North America. Almonds, which are of the soft-shell
variety, possess a sweeter nut than those in hard
shells, which may be slightly bitter. The presence
of 2-4 percent amygdalin, commonly known as laetrile,
has caused almonds to be considered as a cancer-preventing
nut. Most of the fats of the almond are polyunsaturated
and are high in linoleic acid, our main essential
oil. Almond oil is a very stable oil used in pharmaceutical
preparations, to hold scents in fragrant oils,
or for massage therapy. Almonds are very high
in vitamin E, and contain some B vitamins. Calcium
is also found in high amounts, and almonds or
homemade almond milk can be used as a tasty calcium
source. Copper, iron, zinc, potassium, and phosphorus
are also present in good amounts, as are magnesium
and manganese. Sodium is very low. Some selenium
is present. COMMENT: Make sure you are
consuming raw, organic almonds (not roasted).
Limiting your in-take to 10-12 almonds per day
will give you all of the above benefits.
UNDERLYING
CAUSES THAT CAN CONTRIBUTE TO DEPRESSION

nutrients and
amino acids which are necessary for proper brain
physiology. * Candidiasis: Chronic overgrowth

the auto immune system * Intestinal parasites:
Symptoms of parasitic infection include brain
fog, depression and feelings of doom. * Lack
of
exercise: Non-exercisers are three times more
likely to have depression as exercisers. *
Leaky
Gut Syndrome: Caused by candidiasis and intestinal
parasites can lead to allergic reactions, poor
absorption of food, and malnourishment. * Lifestyle:
High stress levels, smoking and lack of exercise

THE HEALING
SOUND OF MUSIC
Unfortunately,
much of the western medical establishment refuses
to acknowledge the incredible benefits of music.
It is not employed regularly in most hospitals
and medical practices, and is not covered by insurance.
Despite the overwhelming amount of anecdotal evidence
that music heals, the medical establishment will
argue that there is no 'proof' of the efficacy
of music - nothing which meets the rigorous requirements
of the scientific method.
But healing isn't
about science. Healing is about people. And real
people are experiencing very real results from
the healing power of music, often through the
efforts of volunteers, in hospices, senior centers,
and in cancer and children's wards.
Stress is the
number one indicator of the likelihood of having
a heart attack or stroke. More than diet, more
than family history, more than weight. Stress
kills. Music offers us relief from stress in many
ways. It helps us to open ourselves emotionally
and let loose with feelings that may be causing
disease. It inspires us to examine ourselves,
our lives and our relationships. Through our mind
and emotion, music can reduce stress.
Music also has
measurable physical effects on the body. Certain
kinds of music actually lower blood pressure and
heart rate, regulate breathing and lower cholesterol.
For individuals with hypertension and related
conditions, music can be much more powerful (and
safer) than many prescription drugs.
Our immune systems
are being challenged every moment. Stress, pollution
in the air, our water, our food; new strains of
antibiotic-resistant bacteria; they all take a
toll on our body's ability to fight disease.
Despite the millions
of dollars being spent on research, cancer is
rampant today. Tuberculosis is actually becoming
a problem again, and countless viruses are attacking
from all directions. What can we do to reverse
the ravages of a weakened immune system? Listen
to and make music. Research has shown that alkaline
music (such as soothing classical, East Indian,
harp music and chant) actually increases the body's
ability to ward off disease.
People undergoing
surgery require less anesthesia, awaken from anesthesia
more quickly and with less side effects, and heal
more rapidly when healing music is played before,
during and after the surgical procedure. Patients
recovering from heart attacks and strokes respond
much more quickly to treatment when soothing music
is played in their rooms.
Many studies have
shown the incredible effects that music has on
chronic pain. People suffering from back pain,
fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and pain
from injuries; all benefit from using music. Physical
therapy is much more effective when combined with
music. And burn victims experience much less pain
when music they choose and enjoy is employed during
their treatments.
Individuals suffering
from depression need less medication and have
more success in psychotherapy when music is added
to their course of treatment. Grief, loneliness,
even anger; are all managed much better when appropriate
music is added to therapy.
Autistic children
and children diagnosed with attention deficit
disorder all react positively to music therapy.
Kids with learning disabilities show remarkable
improvement in mathematics, reading and reasoning
skills when they are exposed to appropriate music.
The results are magnified many times when these
same children have an opportunity to make music.
That's true of
anyone suffering from nearly any malady. Making
music - the act of creating melodious sound -
is an incredibly powerful healing tool. Physical,
mental and emotional challenges are met so much
more easily when one can make music! It doesn't
have to be performance quality - it just has to
be from the heart. Singing, humming, toning, whistling,
beating a drum, playing a flute or harp or guitar
or piano - anything. When music is made out of
love, incredible healing occurs.
On the other hand,
music that is negative, or filled with hate or
fear, can be emotionally and physically damaging.
It inspires more fear, and from fear comes imbalance
and disease. And just as the sound of a jackhammer
sets up painful vibrations in our ears, music
with discordant frequencies or hateful lyrics
sets up dissonant vibrations in our bodies and
souls. We must be conscious of the negative effects
of raucous sounds and negative music, and counteract
them with positive music created out of love.
The health of
the physical body is inextricably tied to our
emotional, mental and spiritual health. Music
is a powerful catalyst for healing because it
touches the very core of humanity... our souls.
With music, we can remember our connection to
the Creator and the powerful Healer within. We
can take control of our health and our lives as
we enjoy The Healing Sound of Music.

Antibacterial
Soaps 'Cause for Concern.' A survey shows
that
nearly half of all hand soaps -- including 75
percent of liquid soaps available in the
U.S.
and nearly one-third of all bar soaps – contain
antibacterials, despite growing evidence that
the products facilitate the emergence of bacteria
with mutations that make them resistant to antibiotics.
COMMENT: Use all "natural" soaps & cleansers.
Reducing
TV Viewing Prevents Obesity. A recent study
at Stanford University
has shown that reducing television, videotape
and video-game use can help prevent childhood
obesity. Researchers gave children in one
elementary
school an 18-lesson, six-month classroom curriculum
to reduce overall TV viewing. Compared with
controls,
children who took the course had statistically
significant decreases in body mass index,
waist
circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio. COMMENT:
Have your children "sign-up" for a parent designated
time of TV viewing per week (ex. 2 hours/week).
Then let them pick out, with your guidance, what
shows they will use to complete their "allotted
time." Keep the TV off as much as possible…yes,
you will get used to it AND after a couple of
weeks you will see that your children have found
"better" ways to use their time.
Diet
Cuts Cholesterol Within a Week. A recent
study has shown that a
very high-fiber vegetable, fruit and nut diet
can reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol
(LDL, the "bad cholesterol") by 33% within
a week and possibly decrease the risk of
colon cancer.
Preventing Artery
Clogging With Lutein. Lutein, a yellow pigment
found in dark green leafy vegetables and egg yolks,
may help prevent clogging of neck arteries, researchers
report in Circulation: Journal of the American
Heart Association. There is also some evidence
that lutein supplementation may help prevent macular
degeneration, the most common cause of irreversible
blindness in the elderly.
Will
Sedentary Death Syndrome Get You? Researchers
say that 60
percent of all Americans are currently at risk
for Sedentary Death Syndrome, or "SeDS," a condition
that leads to premature disability or death. They
estimate that approximately 2.5 million Americans
will die prematurely in the next 10 years because
of SeDS--a number greater than all alcohol, guns,
motor vehicles, illicit drug use and sexual behavior
related deaths combined. COMMENT: This is reason
enough to GET UP AND GET GOING! A "brisk" walk
about an hour before bed will not only get you
moving but will also help you to get a good night’s
rest.
Study: Apples,
Tomatoes Good for Lungs. British scientists have
found that, if you want to have healthy lungs,
you should eat apples and tomatoes. They apparently
can help to reduce the risk of asthma and chronic
lung diseases.
Tai
Chi Cuts Arthritis Pain in Elderly. Tai Chi,
a gentle form
of exercise long practiced in China, can significantly
reduce arthritic pain in the elderly, according
to a pilot study. COMMENT: These classes
are "popping-up"
everywhere…check out your local fitness center
or community center.
Natural
Light Aids Productivity, Grades. A new study
suggests
that natural light increases human productivity
and helps children do better in school. COMMENT:
Consider changing your light bulbs to Full-Spectrum
Lighting. You can purchase these at "Bed, Bath
and Beyond" and also at many health food stores.
5 Herbal Headache
Helpers - Ginger: may cut the severity of migraines,
especially those linked with nausea. Lavender:
commonly used for stress-induced tension headaches.
Passionflower: may alleviate stress and ease muscle
tension that contributes to headaches. Skullcap:
best for tension headaches, especially those associated
with mental or physical exhaustion. May soothe
nervous tension that contributes to head pain.
White Willow: relieves pain with compounds similar
to aspirin.
Emotional
Words Best Heard In Left Ear. If you want
to tell someone
you love them you should tell them through their
left ear. People are more likely to remember
emotional
words, such as "love," if they hear them through
their left ear, a study by psychologists at Sam
Houston State University in Texas found. It revealed
that if sweet nothings are heard through the
right
ear, they are more likely to be forgotten. The
researchers say their findings can be explained
by the fact that the left ear is controlled by
the right side of the brain, which in turn is
responsible for processing emotions. The findings
are consistent with the role of the brain's right
hemisphere in the processing of emotional stimuli.
The researchers found the participants had a
stronger
memory of emotional words they had heard through
the left ear. Their recollection of similar words
heard through the right ear was not as strong.
COMMENT:
Words such as "love" are healing to the soul…use
them often!
