Understanding Peristalsis
updated 01/17/2008
Peristalsis is the autonomic (involuntary) response of the body to substances ingested. It occurs in the digestive tract as a means to push material forward in the small intestine. Once it passes into the large intestine, a series of muscle contractions occur to insure that the material continues forward along the tract.
Sluggish production of bile can decrease peristalsis.
Chronic colon diseases, stimulant laxatives can decrease the natural peristaltic bowel action to the point where it becomes necessary to have some stimulant in order to get the body to eliminate waste. Cinnamon is a stimulant for peristalsis and bile production, to requirements for digestion. Remember that there are natural alternatives to chemical stimulants to encourage proper, natural eliminations.
