updated 06/12/2008
For many people, owning a pet is one of life's greatest pleasures. In fact, more than 70% of households in the United States have a dog or cat. Dogs, cats, birds, and other animals can all be wonderful sources of companionship and relaxation. However, these benefits sometimes come at a price. Pet dander allergies are a serious problem for many people, and can get in the way of their ability to fully enjoy their pets.
Dangers of Exposure to Pet Dander
Pet dander allergies may flair up after a time or almost immediately. The symptoms are cold and flu like, as your body reacts and tries to remove the toxins it has inhaled. If you have allergic reactions to animals, you may experience, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose and watery or itchy eyes.

How to Eliminate Pet Dander in Indoor Air
With an estimated 15 million people in the United States being allergic to cats, dogs, or other animals, there is a good chance that someone in your family suffers from this affliction. Luckily, there are many things that you can do to help protect yourself from the dangers of pet dander.
- Keep a place in your home that is strictly "pet free". Ideally, this would be your bedroom, so you can get a good night's rest.
- Use a high quality, earth-friendly air purifier to remove pet dander.
- Put impermeable covers on all of your pillows and mattresses. Pet dander and other allergens can accumulate on these things.
- As much as possible, avoid cloth curtains, cloth blinds, and carpeted floors. These are also prime places for pet dander to hide.
- Bathe your pet(s) at least once a week.
- If you can resist, try not to pet or hug your pet if you are allergic. This will almost certainly cause your symptoms to flare up. If you just can't keep your hands off of your pet, wear gloves and a mask when doing so.
- Keep litter boxes away from the main air supply for the home.
- In addition to using a high-efficiency air purifier to remove pet dander, you should also use a HEPA vacuum cleaner, or at least high-efficiency vacuum cleaner bags.
