How to Eliminate Tobacco Smoke From Indoor Air

updated 06/16/2008

How to Eliminate Environmental Tobacco Smoke from the Air

The quality of indoor air is more of a threat to your health than you may be aware of. Many diseases and illnesses are caused by pollutants carried on air indoors, at home, at school, shopping malls, and other tightly sealed buildings.

Tobacco smoke is a particularly dangerous pollutant that contributes to such diseases as lung cancer. Because of the serious threat that environmental tobacco smoke poses, and the attention that it's received from the public and the results of countless studies from the scientific communities, the government has begun to take action by implementing and enforcing smoke-free buildings. For the best health of your family, you should carry this practice into your home as well.

Dangers of Exposure to Tobacco Smoke

  • Secondhand exposure to the chemistry of environmental tobacco smoke increases the risk of getting heart disease by up to 30%. 1
  • There is an increased incidence of asthma cases among children who are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. 2
  • Tobacco smoke has been implicated as a source of tuberculosis infections. 3
  • Environmental tobacco smoke can cause cancer, even in non-smokers. 4

The Environmental Protection Agency has gone so far as to say that 60% of American homes are hazardous to our health, partly due to the effects of environmental tobacco smoke.

How to Eliminate Environmental Tobacco Smoke from the Air

Nature Fights Tobacco Smoke

Is there any reason why you would not eliminate tobacco smoke from your air in the face of the serious health risks posed? If you're outdoors there's help from nature to fight against tobacco smoke.

  • Rays from the sun generate ultraviolet germicidal light, which destroys many of the harmful elements found in the air.
  • Nature transforms some oxygen into ozone, which is a super powerful cleaning agent.
  • Lightening ionizes air particles, making them resistant to pollutants such as environmental tobacco smoke.

How to Eliminate Toxins from Tobacco Smoke in Indoor Air

There are many ways to reduce or eliminate tobacco smoke from indoor air. The following tips are from Dr. Group's book "Health Begins in the Colon".

  • QUIT SMOKING! This is the most obvious solution and is the only way to completely eliminate environmental tobacco smoke. Still, many people struggle to quit.
  • Until you quit smoking, make sure you always smoke outside, away from your home. And, ask any smoking guests to do the same.
  • Go natural until you quit completely! Smoke organic and all-natural tobacco.
  • Part of the smoking habit is just that, habit, which is to say it's psychological. Try substituting your smoking habit with something that will distract and satisfy you, like a short brisk walk or other activity.
  • When you go out to eat, avoid environmental tobacco smoke as much as possible by asking for a table in a non-smoking section. Even better, go to establishments that are totally smoke-free.
  • Dr. Group recommends several types of air purifiers to help eliminate tobacco smoke from your indoor air.
  • Another thing that you can do is to detoxify your system using gallbladder, liver and intestinal cleanses. The heavy metals cleanse will help with many metals some of which are introduced by environmental tobacco smoke.
  • If you are a non-smoker, or have finally managed to quit, be proud!
